5,000 HP, Sun and EMC Customers Moved to IBM Systems and Storage Since 2004

Claimed Big Blue

IBM announced that since 2004, more than 5,000 companies worldwide have replaced their HP, Sun, and EMC products with energy-efficient IBM Systems and Storage. Companies have invested in IBM’s System z, Power and System x servers as well as IBM Storage to tackle their most-challenging business objectives and to help reduce sprawling data center costs for labor, energy and real estate.

"Our problems with our hardware vendors were snowballing. Rising energy costs, the need for additional servers, poor support and lack of reliability led us to the decision to make the change to an IBM solution," said Ron Payne, director of infrastructure services for Alagasco, which provides clean-burning, energy-efficient natural gas to more than 450,000 homes, businesses and industries in central and north Alabama. Under the guidance of IBM and IBM Business Partner Mainline Information Systems, Alagasco expects significant savings from its IBM server consolidation project by migrating off HP and Sun servers.

IBM most recently announced the System z Migration Factory, which builds on the company’s Migration Factory programs for IBM’s Power Systems and storage products. The Migration Factory includes competitive server assessments, migration services, and other resources to help customers achieve energy and space savings and lower their cost of ownership.

Highlights include:

  • For System z: In less than one year, IBM has migrated more than 150 customers worldwide from competitive systems to IBM mainframes in industries such as Distribution, Financial Services, General Business and Public Sector.
  • For Power Systems: IBM has migrated more than 1,300 customers worldwide in industries such as Financial Services, Communications, Public Sector, and General Business. For Storage: IBM has migrated approximately 2,900 customers worldwide in industries including Communications, Financial Services, General Business and Public Sector. Sample IBM Migration Factory customers include Adecco, Baylor, Ercot, OSRAM SYLVANIA, Phase 2, Prudential Fox & Roach, Ranstad, among others. IBM has also migrated more than 800 customers around the globe this year to its System x products in industries such as Distribution, Financial Services, and General Business.

"Based on the long, positive experience we have made with IBM and their infrastructure solutions and services, we feel well prepared for the future," said Franz-Theo Brockhoff, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Finanz Informatik. Finanz Informatik recently awarded IBM with a five-year extension of its strategic contract with IBM focused around streamlining FI into a new enterprise data center to help lower technology costs, reduce energy consumption, and improve overall IT performance.

"Clients continue to seek out Sirius and IBM for solutions to address their technology requirements and facilitate growth in the current business environment. Technology migrations require a holistic approach, carefully selected technologies, and knowledgeable experts. And because of our IBM certified and seasoned teams of sales and technical professionals, we’re uniquely positioned to help our clients select the right IBM technology solution for their needs," said Joe Mertens, president of IBM Premier Business Partner Sirius Computer Solutions.

It will be also interesting to know how many IBM customers moved to HP, Sun or EMC...

Remember that the early success of EMC was based on Symmetrix sold mostly to IBM customers.
