Dot Hill DC Power Supply Option for Entire R/Evolution Architecture Platform

To improve energy efficiencies

Dot Hill Systems Corp. has extended general availability of its Direct Current (DC) power supply option to its 2000 Series. First announced in June with the company’s 5730 midrange storage arrays, the Dot Hill DC power supply option allows users to improve energy efficiencies and realize cost savings in the data center and remote/mobile environments.

IT executives are constantly looking for new ways to improve energy efficiency and reduce expenditures in the data center,” said Cooper Cowart, Dot Hill’s vice president of marketing. “That’s why we have extended the DC power supply option from our 5730 midrange arrays to our 2000 Series, rounding out our entire R/Evolution Architecture Platform with this energy-saving feature. The 2000 Series are the only products in their class to offer a DC power supply option.”

A study by The Lawrence Berkeley National Labs (LBNL) found that DC power not only saved as much as 28 percent in power consumption compared to AC, with additional savings fostered by an overall reduction in cooling, but DC power was also found to be much more reliable than traditional AC power. While current AC systems require a series of power conversions that result in energy being released in the form of heat, which then must subsequently be cooled, DC power reduces the number of power conversions and the associated cooling costs.

Dot Hill 2000 Series Storage Arrays

All Dot Hill 2000 Series storage arrays are based on Dot Hill’s R/Evolution Architecture, a highly modular, highly dynamic system that is designed to rapidly evolve and support OEM technology and enable OEMs to quickly achieve sustainable, competitive advantage in the volume storage market. Dot Hill 2000 Series arrays feature several competitive advantages with patented technologies such as Simulcache, EcoStor and AssuredSnap.

The Dot Hill 2330 features a 12-drive array housed in a 2 rack unit (2U) enclosure providing four 1Gb iSCSI interfaces to internal SAS or SATA-II disk drives. An internal SAS interface allows up to five disk enclosures (including the RAID enclosure) delivering a total of 56 drives. The 2530 provides four 3Gb 4 lane SAS host connectivity ports. Both the 2330 and 2530 provide the capability to mix SATA and SAS technology within a single disk enclosure for an optimum, tiered storage environment and better Information Lifecycle Management. The 2730 and 2730T are the company’s next-generation, flexible storage platform for OEMs. The 2730 features 4Gb Fibre Channel host connectivity, which allows customers to experience the quality, availability and ease-of-use of up to 56 mixed SAS and SATA drives.
