Dynamex With Overland REO VTL and NEO Tape Library

The customer is a same-day delivery and logistics company in North America.

Overland Storage, Inc. announced that Dynamex Inc., provider of same-day delivery and logistics services in the United States and Canada, has deployed the REO 9100c disk-based backup, recovery and virtual tape library (VTL) appliance with hardware compression as well as the NEO 4200 scalable tape library. Overland’s tiered data protection platform delivers a highly efficient and expandable disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) backup and recovery solution, enabling Dynamex to increase its compliance capabilities while dramatically reducing administrative overhead and media costs.

Over the past 16 years, Dynamex has built a rapidly growing network of 60 branch locations in North America to offer same-day, on-demand and scheduled transportation and distribution solutions services as well as dedicated fleet management services. The Dallas-based company, which went public in 1996, adheres to a series of IT and security best practices to support aggressive expansion, broadened delivery services and complete compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) regulations.

Continued corporate expansion led to increased data storage growth, making it increasingly difficult for Dynamex to backup 10 TBs of mission-critical data within its allotted timeframe. Moreover, the inability to retain a month of backup data onsite slowed the company’s ability to respond rapidly to compliance, e-discovery and file recovery requests. As a result, Dynamex decided to add a disk-based VTL to its backup equation as well as upgrade its tape library with a more scalable platform.

According to Rodger Krueger, NT administrator at Dynamex, Overland’s REO 9100c with hardware compression doubles VTL capacity to offer the most economical retention of backup data on disk while the NEO 4200 scales easily to 192 TBs of capacity for "future proof" expandability. "Dynamex relies on the REO 9100c as our first line of defense since we can retain up to six weeks of backup data on disk," he says. "By stepping up to NEO 4200, we can archive more data with less media and no more concerns about running out of space."

With its multiple layers of data protection, Dynamex has improved backup performance and reliability, accelerated recovery and increased disk-based data retention. Restoring files, which once could take days, now is nearly instantaneous. Additionally, media costs have been reduced by up to 75 percent and administrative overhead has dropped by 80 percent.

According to Ravi Pendekanti, vice president of worldwide marketing for Overland Storage, a robust data protection solution built around flexible, reliable disk and tape appliances offers the best opportunity to meet ever-increasing backup, recovery and compliance requirements. "With Overland’s REO and NEO platforms, we give customers a range of flexible data protection choices to meet their specific business requirements," he says. "For Dynamex, a focus on compliance and improved backup and recovery drove the need for greater disk-based retention and more scalable long-term archival, which was addressed easily and economically with our best-in-class D2D2T solution."
