Freescale MC1322x Uses SST 1.8V, 1 Mb SST25WF010 SPI Serial Flash Device

Getting lower power and smaller footprint

SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc.) announced that a development collaboration between the company and Freescale Semiconductor has yielded the latest addition to Freescale’s line of Platform in Package (PiP) solutions designed for IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee protocols.

The Freescale MC1322x platform uses SST’s 1.8V, 1 Mbit SST25WF010 SPI serial flash device, which offers one of the industry’s smallest form factors and lowest power consumption rates. With a maximum active power consumption for both read and write operations that is significantly less than that of competing 3V solutions, the SST25WF010 enables Freescale’s latest PiP to deliver a battery life measured in decades. The Freescale MC1322x is part of a product family that offers one of the highest performing solutions for IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee protocols on the market today.

"We designed our PiP products for IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee protocols knowing that our customers’ performance and power consumption requirements would be demanding," said Brett Black, manager of Freescale’s Wireless Connectivity Operation. "SST’s SPI serial flash technology played a key role in our successful delivery of one of the industry’s lowest power, highest performance solution for IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee protocols."

"ZigBee technology is a rapid growth area in the wireless space and SST’s low-power SPI serial flash technology enables ZigBee-powered devices to operate for years at a time," said Cary Wong, senior manager, segment marketing, SST. "Coupling our SST25WF010 device with Freescale’s high performance, low power MC1322x family gives ZigBee system designers the ideal development platform."

About the SST25WF SPI Serial Flash Family

Based on SST’s proprietary SuperFlash technology, products in the SST25WFxxx family feature densities up to 4 Mbit, with higher densities scheduled for availability later this year. The SST25WFxxx serial flash devices feature a single supply voltage of 1.65V to 1.95V for read and write operations. Active read currents are 2 mA (typical at 20 MHz), standby currents are only 1 microamp and maximum write currents are 10 mA for both program and erase operations. With this performance, the SST25WFxxx family achieves the lowest voltage and lowest standby current consumption in the industry for SPI serial flash. Utilizing SST’s low-power SPI serial flash memory devices in portable electronic systems enables customers to extend battery life in their portable applications, while the densities allow for more content and additional features to be incorporated into mobile systems.

About ZigBee technology
ZigBee is a low-power wireless communications technology and international standard protocol for the next-generation wireless network, reducing data size and allowing for lower-cost network construction with simplified protocol and limited functionality. ZigBee uses the PHY and MAC layers defined by IEEE 802.15.4, which is the short-distance wireless communication standard for 2.4 GHz band. ZigBee comprises the ZigBee platform specifications and ZigBee profiles defined by the ZigBee Alliance.
