New SAS/SATA HDD Enclosures by CRU-DataPort

For D2D backup and DR

CRU-DataPort announces the release of several new high-speed, high-capacity Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)/Serial ATA (SATA) desktop and desk-side storage enclosures, ideal for professional or personal uses such as Disk-2-Disk Data Backup and Disaster Recovery.

Available in professional quality 2 and 4 bay enclosures, customers get to choose between DataPort 10, Data Express DX115 or Data Express DE110 rugged removable drive carriers. Each drive carrier supports any capacity 3.5" SAS or SATA hard drive and supports RAID configurations, including RAID0 for pro A/V editing, RAID5 for business database reliability and JBOD. Other applications include offsite disaster recovery and massive data portability.

"SAS is compatible with SATA, which enable users, such as IT managers, to combine high-performance (SAS) and high-capacity (SATA) storage applications, allowing them to choose the most cost-effective solution for their needs," says Bob Bentley Senior Electrical Engineer for CRU-DataPort. "SATA drives can communicate over the same SAS hardware giving the customer a choice. For instance, our Dual Port SAS enclosures support 24/7 high-availability systems such as web server appliances, while routine backups can be offloaded to higher capacity, lower cost per GB SATA drives. This flexibility also makes migration to more space saving and energy efficient storage solutions easier."

"In addition to flexibility, another key advantage is speed. SAS and SATA both provide max transfer rates up to 3Gb/s, while SAS features point-to-point architecture and multi-lane, or ‘wide’ connections, so our 4 Bay’s, featuring a unique 4ˆPort Host Connector, provides up to 24Gb/s aggregate, bi-directional throughput.", said Bentley.

Another key advantage is cooling. Hard drives can overheat so cooling has always been a key element in DataPort design. Each new CRU SAS/SATA enclosure features low-noise cooling fans assigned to every removable drive and a large exhaust fan in the rear improves overall enclosure ventilation.

Finally, CRU offers several easy cabling options. All drives connect to the host via a single 1 meter, InfiniBand Multilane 4x SAS/SATA shielded bundled cable, sold separately due to multiple host connections, including Mini SAS and InfiniBand. If a host does not already have an available connector, CRU offers Host Adapter kits, which include an SFF-8470 PCI Host Adapter bracket and internal SATA Data cables.
