With its global network of approximately 250 offices and agents in more than 100 countries, JAS delivers transportation and logistics services to the world. Major market segments the company supports include retail and fashion, automotive, food and beverage, gas and energy and manufacturing. Through its online tracking and tracing application, JAS provides customers with shipment documentation, door-to-door visibility and data extraction capabilities.
“We have a global IT Infrastructure, so email runs this company, from shipping, to tracking to fulfillment. If we lose email, the company would shut down and that just can’t happen,” said, Joseph Kim, systems engineer for JAS Worldwide.
The company has been experiencing a 20 to 25 percent in email volume year over year. With no retention policies in place, JAS was keeping all files, in order to ensure compliance with Customs regulations and mandates from the Transportation Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security.
“The growth in volume of PST files is a huge issue across our network, with 10-15 gigabytes of PST files per user. Management of these files is time-consuming and it’s a huge administrative burden for us. We need to centralize the storage to reduce complexity and management costs,” said Kim.
Like many organizations, JAS has attempted to deal with its email management problem by outsourcing its Exchange server management to a hosting provider. According to Kim, “outsourcing became too complex and costly with too many layers, so we wanted to bring everything back in-house.”
In addition, disaster recovery functionality was critical to JAS, and was a key requirement for selecting an archiving solution for the company. “Mimosa provides DR and Exchange backup right out of the box,” said Kim. “This is as efficient as it gets and it will help me sleep better at night knowing that we will have an added layer of protection for the company.”
Key Mimosa NearPoint features that were particularly important to JAS Worldwide include:
- Exchange Disaster Data Recovery: Mimosa NearPoint will provides complete disaster recovery of Exchange to the primary Exchange Server using the base NearPoint product, or to a stand-by Exchange Server using the Mimosa NearPoint DR Option. Either way, administrators have the speed of recovering an entire Exchange database at disk-to-disk speeds with simple ‘point-and-click’ operations. To assist with rapid disaster recovery, administrators will use NearPoint to define disaster failover policies to automate the entire failover process.
- Automated PST Archiving: The NearPoint PST Archiving Option seamlessly integrates with NearPoint and provides total management of the PST archival process. The NearPoint PST Archiving Option automatically locates and archives all PST files according to the administrator-defined policy. It maps all permissions and profiles of each user’s PST files without user intervention or involvement. This capability reduces the amount of time required for archiving PST files.
- Continuous Application Shadowing: Mimosa NearPoint incorporates an innovative data-capture method called Continuous Application Shadowing. Continuous Application Shadowing captures Exchange log files the instant they are committed to disk and stores them ‘off-host’ on NearPoint. Continuous Application Shadowing is an application-intelligent process and blocks corruption from the backup copy. All email content extracted from the log files is indexed and stored with single-instance storage. Continuous Application Shadowing captures complete Exchange mailbox information, as well as email stored offline in PST files and all content found in public folders – a major advantage for eDiscovery and Exchange recovery.
“Companies like JAS Worldwide, depend on email as the primary business application and they, need a unified archiving and data protection solution to ensure business continuity,” said Christophe Culine, senior vice president of sales, Mimosa Systems. “NearPoint is the only unified content solution that can manage the discovery, retention and protection of information across its lifecycle to limit exposure, minimize risk and reduce costs.”
