More Performance and Lower Energy Consumption With Defragmentation

A study by 3D Professor announced by Diskeeper

Diskeeper has released its new white paper on how Diskeeper 2008 can help companies reduce energy consumption. The study was performed by 3D Professor and was focused on determining the energy savings that Diskeeper can afford users when installed on a machine.

It’s the mantra in these days of energy-consumption awareness, especially in business: go faster, produce more products, and continue to stay ahead of the competition but reduce power use. In the past it’s a factor companies hadn’t had to consider, but now that energy comes at such a high price, corporations are having to severely examine their consumption and utilization of energy.

In order to remain competitive but lower resource usage while doing so, enterprises are implementing power-efficient manufacturing methods, trading company-owned gas-guzzling luxury cars for hybrids, upgrading equipment to be as energy-efficient as possible, and putting all computer systems on completely automatic defragmentation.

Diskeeper with its proprietary InvisiTasking technology defragments invisibly, in the background, keeping systems running at maximum performance without consuming extra resources. Systems utilizing Diskeeper with InvisiTasking have been found through recent tests to run with lower energy usage and produce faster results across the boards for all systems tested.

Test results showed an average of 0.12 KWH (kilowatt hours) of energy savings per PC in a given day, which amounts to considerable savings when extended over the course of a year. Assuming average cost of US commercial KWH at $0.0941, that is a savings of $21.86 per PC. Calculating these power savings to a medium sized company with 250 workstations we see an approximate annual savings of $5,465.33. As can be seen from these results, Diskeeper pays for itself through energy savings in an enterprise environment.

When files are fragmented, a hard drive is under undue stress due to the extra I/O requests needed to collect each and every fragment of each and every file. Not only is performance severely decreased, but hard drive life is shortened due to additional thrashing of the read-write head and energy use is increased. Conversely, when files are kept defragmented, performance is heightened, hard drive life is lengthened and, last but certainly not least, energy output is lowered.

Diskeeper with InvisiTasking utilizes only idle resources so that there is never a negative performance hit from defragmentation and performance is always maximized. Along with other key measures, Diskeeper helps systems achieve the prime goal of upping performance while consuming less precious energy.
