Out of Stealth Mode, Start-Up KAPSEAN Unveils iSCUBE Beta Software

This storage OS for SOHO or SMB market builds a virtualization storage solution by inserting a CD into a PC and repurposing it as a storage brick or array.

KAPSEAN announces its Beta Software is now available to the general public. If you would like to beta test iSCUBE Storage Software Solutions, you can register on our website to get a copy of the CD.

KAPSEAN’s iSCUBE Storage Server OS lets you build your own storage solution by simply inserting a CD into a standard PC and repurposing it as a storage brick or array. To deploy simply plug storage nodes into an IP network and use our client applications to discover, manage and provision storage for Windows servers, desktops and notebooks.

The following Quad client storage applications are included on CD:

MyiDisk — Network Storage for Windows Desktops and Notebooks

  • Add a scalable and fault tolerant disk as secondary storage
  • Clone system disk for local disaster recovery – includes 1-click disk restore CD

MyiVault — Network Disk Repository for all Windows Clients

  • Backup internal hard drives – full or optimal copies
  • Archive removable drives – full or optimal copies
  • Add a scalable and fault tolerant disk as secondary storage
  • Clone system disk for local disaster recovery – includes 1-click disk restore CD

MyiStorage — Network Storage for Windows Servers

  • Add application-tuned disks; includes Windows dynamic disk option
  • Disks are scalable and fault tolerant – includes max protection option (dual parity)
  • Backup internal hard drives – full or optimal copies
  • Archive removable drives – full or optimal copies
  • Clone system disk for local disaster recovery – includes 1-click disk restore CD

MyiGrid — Distributed Virtual SAN

  • Complete storage resource manager
  • Dynamic volumes with resize, reshape, migration options – replication soon
  • Support for multiple storage pools
  • Role-based administration and remote client management

Founded four years ago, KAPSEAN Inc. is a privately-held Sudbury, MA-based storage software company focused on developing a storage virtualization software to deliver a personal/small business network storage solutions that offer the same degree of reliability, availability and scalability features expected of commercial products.

Most of its executives came from DEC and then EMC, like chairman, CEO and founder Shawn Nagar, CTO Martin Blitz, VP of business development, marketing and sales Leonardo Salazar, VP consumer support Ravi Nene. VP engineering Roger Gaudet was also formerly at EMC. Nagar sold his former venture Shawn Systems to EMC in 2001.

The start-up demonstrates for the first time its innovative patent-pending iSCUBE (ice cube) storage OS at CES 2008 last January.

This software enables low-cost clustered storage for medium businesses. It allows customers to convert purpose-built platforms like the Intel SS4200-E into standalone iSCUBE nodes. Each node can be deployed by simply plugging it into the network and multiple nodes will auto-discover each other to form a single pool of storage. By installing a Windows-based application on a client PC, users can auto-configure a personal formatted virtual disk drive with one click.

"The one click demo you gave of an iSCSI target appearing magically like a USB drive was really cool. MyiDisk is by far the easiest iSCSI installation I have witnessed to date," said Brian L. Garrett, Technical Director, ESG Lab.

The roadmap for the SOHO version includes:

  • Companion product for Windows Home Server - make boot / data disks scalable and fault tolerant,
  • Remote Replication and Archival Solution, including personal management over the Internet.

And for the SMB version:

  • Boot from iSCSI (BFi) solution for Windows Desktop Workgroups and server farms,
  • Remote hosting and storage management solution for ISP/SSP customers.

Pricing for MyiDisk is about $50 per seat.
