Channel One in Russia Adopts Front Porch Digital
With a Sun StorageTek SL8500 tape library
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on April 29, 2008 at 2:56 pmFront Porch Digital announced that Russia’s Channel One has implemented the company’s DIVArchive (Distributed Intelligent Versatile Archive) as part of a renovation of its news production workflow. Based in Moscow, Channel One is Russia’s most widely viewed television station, featuring 30 news bulletins per day, international hits, and its own productions, which include some of Russia’s most popular feature films. At Channel One, DIVArchive middleware enables a unified CSM system, allowing content to be ingested, stored, managed, converted, and made available to newsroom, editing systems, and digital media workflow applications.
"As broadcasters everywhere respond to the demands of ever more competitive markets, DIVArchive enjoys even greater recognition and sales growth. This is no coincidence,” said Rino Petricola, Front Porch Digital senior vice president and managing director. “By enabling broadcasters to optimize workflow efficiency, leverage content assets, and enhance quality, DIVArchive helps to provide broadcasters the competitive edge they need.”
At Channel One, the DIVArchive solution consists of one Manager, which maintains the database, manages application requests, and controls storage resources; and eight Actors, which move content between media servers and storage in a Sun StorageTek SL8500 tape library with eight T10000 tape drives. As configured, the DIVArchive can sustain throughputs as high as 7,680 Mbps.
“Our reliance on Front Porch Digital has enabled us to implement a streamlined procedure for dealing with content,” said Anton Philippov, deputy of the news production department at Channel One. “We have also made strides in eliminating the expense and inconvenience of tape, yielding a much more cost-effective system that forms a good foundation for our future growth.”
The DIVArchive system was installed by Moscow-based Okno-TV and went on air in late 2007. Founded in 1991, Okno-TV is the leading Russian systems integrator with more than 2,000 clients in Moscow and surrounding regions.
