Seagate Recovery Services Adds Three Data Erasure Solutions

For hard disk drives

Seagate Recovery Services, a Seagate Technology
company, announced the availability of three new data erasure
solutions to enable companies to address privacy and data security
issues when disposing of or recycling IT equipment. The Seagate Data
Eraser products utilize a series of advanced algorithms to erase all
data from a disk drive so that proprietary and sensitive information
does not get into the wrong hands.

For many industries, legal regulations, such as the
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA), govern the handling of proprietary,
sensitive or personal information. With personal and corporate data
increasing at exponential rates and more sensitive information located
on local PCs or notebook hard drives, organizations need to properly
dispose of data so that they do not expose themselves to potential
legal liability or in some cases, possible criminal prosecution.

The Seagate Data Erasure products deliver among the fastest
erasing speeds and outstanding control functions in the industry, and
also provide a Certificate of Erasure so organizations can confidently
dispose of or recycle a hard disk drive knowing that data has been
erased. The products offer a choice of 13 data erasure programs,
including NSA, DoD, US Armed Services, NCSC, NATO and Gutmann
recommended methods, and are highly suitable for a variety of uses
from erasing a single disk to providing a network-based solution for
erasing a large inventory of disk drives.

The Seagate Data Eraser
products include:

  • USB Edition: a portable, hand-size
device that can be connected to any PC to access and erase a
    disk drive.
  • Network Edition: a software-based
solution, ideally suited for corporate IT departments,
installed on a server that can erase data via corporate
    intranets on selected disk drives.
  • Disk Recycler Edition: a software-based
solution that is designed for erasing large numbers of disks
over a network connection. This is ideal for businesses that
    recycle their computers.

"Our internal studies show that more than 50 percent of drives
returned from customer data centers were not properly erased and still
contained corporate data. With the growing amount of information kept
on personal computers, sensitive customer and corporate data must be
securely managed from the time it is created until it is destroyed
,"
said Jay Remley, president of the Seagate Recovery Services business
unit of the Seagate Services Group. "A thorough internal data security
process that utilizes the Seagate Data Eraser products will help
organizations remove corporate data leaks and avoid the consequences
of improper data disposal or access.
