Hilton Grand Vacations Selects 3PAR
To virtualize and consolidate datacenter infrastructure
This is a Press Release edited by StorageNewsletter.com on March 27, 2008 at 12:41 pm3PAR announced that Hilton
Grand Vacations, the timeshare division of Hilton Hotels Corporation,
has implemented 3PAR Utility Storage to support its key
mission-critical applications. In addition to selecting multiple 3PAR
InServ Storage Servers to be dispersed geographically, the company has
also implemented a complete virtual datacenter based on the 3cV blueprint.
"3cV" stands for the combination of the 3PAR InServ Storage Server, HP
BladeSystem c-Class, and VMware Infrastructure. These elements combine
to form a complete utility computing offering that has enabled
customers to halve server, storage, and operational costs and to gain
instant agility.
"With 3PAR, we have achieved
remarkable gains in business agility as well as cost reduction for a
broad range of applications including our property management system,
databases, messaging, Web servers, and file servers," said Rich
Jackson, Vice President of Technology Operations at Hilton Grand
Vacations. "With 3cV, we have quadrupled administrative efficiency and
can now provision virtualized servers and storage within minutes versus
weeks."
3PAR Utility Storage has enabled Hilton
Grand Vacations to scale its storage environment simply, enabling
management of a growing storage environment in one quarter of the time.
Prior to choosing 3PAR Utility Storage, Hilton Grand Vacations
experienced storage challenges when scaling performance and capacity
for its mission-critical data warehousing application with Microsoft
SQL Server. After considering traditional mid-range and monolithic
storage, the company concluded that these alternatives would result in
unacceptable cost and complexity. Since implementing 3PAR, Hilton Grand
Vacations has observed a 3x improvement in performance of its Microsoft
SQL Server environment.
Using 3PAR Dynamic
Optimization—software that allows customers to change data service
levels in a single command—Hilton Grand Vacations found that moving
volumes to RAID 50 (5+1) from RAID 10 provided not only higher capacity
utilization but retained the high performance they required. In
addition, they have been able to leverage 3PAR Remote Copy to complete
a migration of their entire online dataset from a legacy datacenter to
a new facility.
Pleased with the initial results
experienced with 3PAR Utility Storage, Hilton Grand Vacations undertook
a larger server and storage consolidation initiative with 3cV. By doing
so, the company has joined a growing number of leading enterprises that
have adopted this blueprint for the virtual datacenter, including
Ariba, Deutsche Bank, Martin’s Point Health Care, and SAVVIS. 3PAR now
supports all of the Hilton Grand Vacations application environments
including VMware®, online transaction processing (OLTP), messaging, and
file shares.
"Today’s IT professionals are
increasingly looking for more cost effective ways to weather the
economic times," said Jeff Byrne, Senior Analyst & Consultant at
Taneja Group. "Together, 3PAR Utility Storage and the 3cV virtual
datacenter show tremendous promise in reducing costs while providing
the kind of flexibility that a dynamic business requires."
"Now
more than ever before, agility is key for budget- and time-pressured
CIOs," said David Scott, 3PAR President and CEO. "Our virtualization
demonstrates how a comprehensive utility storage environment can
significantly improve the flexibility, resilience, and efficiency of
today’s IT organizations."
