iSCSI Initiator From ATTO to Connect Macintoshes With HP EVA

For Leopard users

ATTO Technology, Inc. announced that its feature-packed Version 3.10 Xtend SAN iSCSI initiator is available for use with HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Arrays (EVAs) in Mac environments as a connectivity solution for accessing native Fibre Channel storage.

Version 3.10 of Xtend SAN provides new features to aid HP users operating in iSCSI Mac environments including:

  • Leopard Support – Xtend SAN was the first iSCSI initiator to support OS X 10.5, allowing Leopard users to utilize Xtend SAN to connect to the HP StorageWorks EVAs.
  • Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) Support – CHAP is the primary authentication mechanism for iSCSI SANs. The implementation of CHAP in Xtend SAN enhances security of iSCSI SANs by validating the identity of remote clients.
  • Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) Support – iSNS is designed to facilitate the automated discovery, management and configuration of iSCSI storage devices. By implementing iSNS support, Xtend SAN provides a mechanism to simplify device discovery, reducing the time and effort associated with the initial configuration of an iSCSI SAN.
  • Login Redirect – Login redirect increases the availability and reliability of the storage being accessed via Xtend SAN. Enabling login redirect in Xtend SAN allows it to redirect users to their intended targets in situations where the targets may not be available at the expected address. Without redirect, the user would not be able to log in to the intended target if it has moved.

Xtend SAN is the first and most widely-distributed, standalone application that allows Mac users to attach existing storage to an IP-based network. With Xtend SAN, users can take existing direct-attached storage devices and make them available to multiple servers, increasing accessibility and simplifying storage management, while leveraging existing IT expertise. ATTO’s Xtend SAN iSCSI initiator combined with HP EVAs provides a cost-effective, centralized solution for expanding the boundaries of existing Fibre Channel SANs.

ATTO’s Xtend SAN iSCSI initiator lets Mac users tap the incredible opportunity offered by iSCSI SANs, enabling low-cost Ethernet-based solutions that provide businesses with performance, reliability and security technologies for their storage area networks,” said Timothy Klein, president and CEO of ATTO Technology. “Qualification of Xtend SAN with the HP EVA reinforces ATTO’s role in delivering leading storage infrastructure solutions and validates our position as the premier provider of iSCSI Mac solutions for HP users.

The trusted architecture and ease-of-use of the HP Enterprise Virtual Array with ATTO’s Xtend SAN iSCSI initiator software allows our customers to benefit from the integration of key iSCSI applications such as storage consolidation, collaborative workflows and remote connectivity to existing Fibre Channel SANs," said Charles Newfell, section manager, StorageWorks, HP. "With ATTO’s Xtend SAN software, HP EVA users have a secure and highly-available option for Apple Macintosh connectivity.”
