HDS Will Resell Brocade StorageX File Virtualization and Management Software

Read the opinion of Jim Woods.

Brocade announced a reseller
agreement with Hitachi Data Systems whereby Hitachi Data Systems will resell
the Brocade StorageX file virtualization and management software solution.
Through the agreement, Brocade StorageX will offer Hitachi Data Systems
customers an industry-leading solution for file data replication and
migration, as well as centralized management of multiple namespaces. The
innovative solution solves some of today’s most pressing file data management
challenges in distributed heterogeneous environments, including consolidation,
remote office data management, business continuity, and disaster recovery.

"The addition of Brocade StorageX to the Hitachi Data Systems portfolio
extends the Hitachi Data Systems and Brocade relationship into
mission-critical file management solutions,
" said Tom Buiocchi, Brocade Vice
President of Worldwide Marketing. "Together, we are pleased to offer a
best-in-class solution that helps customers manage ever-increasing amounts of
file data.
"

With Brocade StorageX, Hitachi Data Systems will be able to expand its
portfolio and offer a full end-to-end NAS solution with the ability to
virtualize heterogeneous file systems and present a single, consolidated view
of all enterprise files. Hitachi Data Systems customers implementing Brocade
StorageX will be able to experience benefits such as:

  • Centralized management of files via policies that run across a global
    namespace
  • Improved disaster recovery and business continuity via IP replication
and transparent failover in the event of a disaster or a planned outage
  • Storage consolidation via file migration that simplifies upgrades of
    the storage infrastructure
  • Transparent and non-disruptive data management and movement that
requires far less administrative time and effort

  • Hitachi Data Systems will also partner with Brocade to utilize Brocade
StorageX for services designed to help customers who need assistance with
heterogeneous file migrations, data mobility, and non-disruptive migration of
existing data to the Hitachi portfolio of high-performance NAS platforms.

"Brocade StorageX is one of the top file virtualization and management
solutions on the market today, and we see Brocade as a key enabler in
delivering our end-to-end file services strategy to our customers,
" said
Michael Hay, senior director of Product Strategy, Hitachi Data Systems. "By
combining Hitachi Data Systems’ high-end NAS solutions and Brocade StorageX,
our customers will be able to more effectively manage their file data, while
enabling operational flexibility and improving IT efficiency.
"

"As the amount of unstructured data continues to multiply, we are seeing a
dramatic uptake of efficient file management solutions,
" said Tony Asaro,
Senior Analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "The expansion of the
Brocade/Hitachi Data Systems relationship into this market provides further
validation of increased customer demand for comprehensive file area network
solutions that solve management challenges in heterogeneous storage
environments.

Brocade continues its push towards a complete NAS/file server market coverage with its StorageX product.

After the historical NetApp OEM agreement, signed few years ago with NuView (acquired in 2006 by Brocade), and another one concluded with IBM recently, both companies reselling the product under the name VFM (Virtual File Manager), HDS is the last one to select it.

That's good news for Brocade: the StorageX approach demonstrates a good adoption so far in the market

The competition seems to be in a strange position:

* EMC Rainfinity is not sold correctly by EMC, with a bad price and positioning, a lack of focus and above all a lack of features.

* Cisco seems to be killing NeoPath's File Director for the time being even we heard about some potential future integration into a blade in Cisco's IP switches. And Alan Baratz, former NeoPath CEO, is still on board.

* F5 Networks continues to market Acopia's ARX without so much success

* Attune Systems, still independent, seems to be pretty active even if this company is very small. I don't how long this situation will continue and I consider Attune as an acquisition target in 2008.

The FAN market, as Arun Taneja defined it around Summer 2006, appears to change again this year. Networking companies stopped to promote FAN category alone to prefer a more common term "Network File Management or Network File Virtualization". That's the case for Cisco and F5 acquiring companies and representing the second wave of consolidation on the market after the WAFS integration by networking players who completely merge and embed this technology in their generic acceleration solution.

Only really emerging new vendors like Moonwalk, an Australian start-up, continue to surf on the FAN term.

2008 will be definitively an interesting year for file virtualization and we are waiting for a new generation or offering by others vendors to shake the palm and boost end-users adoption.
