New Customer for Tandberg: Stanley International Betting in Malta

Tandberg Data announced a major European customer storage automation win at Stanley International Betting.

Stanley International Betting is one of the leading online sports betting providers across Europe with over 700 Betting Points across Italy, Romania, Croatia, Germany, Belgium, Greece and Cyprus.
Stanley International’s head office and main IT department of 15 is based in Liverpool with their data center located in a secure outsourced hosted site in Malta and remote offices in Brussels, Croatia, Romania, supporting in total over 15,000 Stanley personnel and agents. Andrew Waland, IT Systems Administration Manager, Stanley International commented. “There are very few industries that face the business and competitive challenges that international sports betting companies face. The regulations are tighter than any other industry, and in such a competitive market, any loss of service can mean loss of competitive advantage

As a UK based sports betting retailer, Stanley International needs to tightly demonstrate best practice and due diligence in order to qualify for a Remote Gambling Licence issued by the Maltese Lotteries and Gaming Authority. Without this licence, Stanley International is unable to trade.

With these factors in mind, Stanley International took advice from their trusted channel partner, Willow Starcom, to decrease their 8 hour backup windows; increase reliability and capacity than that achieved by their existing Overland tape autoloader, which had simply been outgrown in expansion. (Stanley’s data is growing 25-30% year on year). The storage solution proposed was two Tandberg Data StorageLibrary T40’s – one residing in Malta (with an LTO-3 SCSI drive) and one in Liverpool (with two LTO-3 fiber drives for simultaneous backup of head office functions). Supporting the European remote offices, 3 x Tandberg Data LTO-2 HH rack mount drives were proposed.

In April 07, the StorageLibrary T40 was delivered to Malta. Stanley International liked the fact that the StorageLibrary T40 was compact in a small 4U form factor but boasted the high capacity and performance that serving 30,000 files a day requires. Reliability was also an essential factor in Stanley’s decision to move to the StorageLibrary T40. The StorageLibrary T40 was racked and installed relatively easily within a few days and then the testing, backup and documentation process went live under remote management from Liverpool.

The StorageLibrary T40 which carries 40 slots, means pretty much unattended backup (previously it had been a manually time consuming job switching tapes). Overall storage management is easier than before and this is done remotely to the island data centre using a web interface. With remote management, Andrew and his team can remotely monitor, control, configure and diagnose the Maltese StorageLibrary T40 – it even notifies them automatically if an error situation is suspected.
In conclusion Andrew simply notes, “The Tandberg Data StorageLibrary T40’s provide Stanley International with a belt-and-braces failsafe system that does not leak data.
