Rubrik Just Raised $41 Million After $10 Million Last March

And introduced hybrid cloud appliance underpinned by its converged data management platform for backup and recovery

Rubrik,  Inc., in converged data management company, announced a $41 million Series B investment led by Greylock Partners with participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners and existing angel investors.

Concurrently, Rubrik introduced the r300 Series Hybrid Cloud Appliance underpinned by its Converged Data Management Platform. The company will use the funding to accelerate its growing global footprint of customers and channel partners.

We are truly humbled by the tremendous response to our Early Access Program announced in March,” said Bipul Sinha, co-founder and CEO, Rubrik. “This early customer traction demonstrates the latent market demand for a platform that delivers radical improvements in TCO while eliminating a complex data management infrastructure with a simple, converged system.”

Redefining the Data Management Landscape
Industry analyst firm IDC estimates that businesses will spend $47 billion in 2015 on infrastructure to protect data, manage DR, enable DevOps, and archive for compliance and long-term retention.

We partner with world-class teams building category-defining companies in large markets,” said Asheem Chandna, partner, Greylock Partners. “Rubrik is a game-changing company that simplifies data management, and has the potential to redefine the backup and recovery markets.”

As part of the investment, Chandna has joined Rubrik’s board of directors. Greylock’s enterprise investments include Data Domain, Docker, Legato, Palo Alto Networks, Pure Storage and Workday.

Rubrik is modernizing the secondary environment with a single, software-defined fabric in the same way that Nutanix has transformed the primary environment with a single, software-defined fabric,” said Dheeraj Pandey, co-founder and CEO, Nutanix, Inc., and Rubrik’s early investor. “Rubrik’s rapid growth is a testament to the real pent-up demand for innovation in backup and recovery.

Rubrik has delivered a transformative enterprise product in record time,” said Ravi Mhatre, partner, Lightspeed Venture Partners. “Moreover, channel partners will love the customer value, partner economics and simplicity of Rubrik r300 Series Hybrid Cloud Appliance.”

Introducing Rubrik r300 Series Hybrid Cloud Appliance
The Rubrik r300 Series Hybrid Cloud Appliance, a 2U unit containing up to four x86 nodes, comes pre-configured with the Rubrik Converged Data Management Platform (RCDM). The platform is anchored by a patent-pending Cloud-Scale File System, a distributed system built from scratch to be version-enabled with intelligent management of flash and spinning disks. Converged Data Management is designed to scale out to tens of thousands of nodes.

Primary benefits of Rubrik r300 Series Hybrid Cloud Appliance include:

  • Easy Setup – Get up and running in less than 15 minutes. Compare to months.
  • Zero-time Recovery – Instantly recover applications by utilizing Rubrik as a mountable live storage endpoint. Compare to weeks.
  • Public Cloud Economics – Intelligently deliver long-term data retention by leveraging public cloud storage. Compare 10x cost savings.
  • Google-like Search – Instantly locate any data with predictive search results based on data stored across private and public clouds. Compare to days.
  • Accelerated App Development – Rapidly provision data to developers by turning Rubrik into a storage endpoint. Compare to weeks.

Rubrik r300 Series Hybrid Cloud Appliances are available through the company’s channel partners.

Jaime Huizar, senior architect, Power Integrations, Inc., said: “In my twenty years of IT experience, I’ve used pretty much every solution in Gartner’s (News – Alert) Magic Quadrant and they’re so complicated that you need a PhD to operate any of them. With Rubrik, it took ten minutes to get up and running. Our upfront software and hardware costs were reduced by 4x.”

Matthew Day, IT manager, Langs Building Supplies, said: “Nothing is as easy as Rubrik. Rubrik is measured ins to minutes, not hours – whether it is searching for data, live mounting a snapshot, or restoring lost data in production. We reduced our backup infrastructure acquisition spend by 2x.”

George Crump, president and founder, Storage Switzerland, said: “Rubrik is one of the more interesting technologies I’ve seen recently in the backup and recovery space. Their ability to converge data protection architectures while making backups live, changes not only the way companies purchase, deploy and manage data protection, it should also change the way companies think about data.”

Vinny Choinski, senior lab analyst, ESG, said: “ESG Lab is excited to be in the initial testing phase of a project highlighting Rubrik’s scale-out data management platform, which converges backup software and deduplicated storage in order to eliminate the need for traditional backup software. Our testing is focused on validating how Rubrik users can get started quickly, drive down RTO with live data access, and locate data instantly with Google-like search. Look for our full results soon on the Rubrik and ESG websites.”
