Identifies performance problem behind SAN fragmentation.

Condusiv Technologies Corp. announced Storage Switzerland‘s report and video of Diskeeper 15 Server.

The report and video, identifies the performance problem behind SAN fragmentation and how Diskeeper 15 keeps SAN systems connected to physical servers running like new. To see the video, visit: Briefing Note: Physical Servers Matter-Diskeeper Keeps Them Running Like New.

The analyst brief summarizes the challenges businesses face when dealing with fragmentation in shared storage systems, where it can decrease performance by more than 25%. The result of this situation for many organizations is that they need a number of IO/s to support a data request. Therefore, many businesses are seeking ways to derive optimal performance from shared storage systems connected to physical systems by addressing fragmentation within the file system. The goal, according to the report, is for blocks to be written and read in a more sequential manner so more data can be processed with every I/O operation.

Diskeeper simply makes NTFS smarter about how it writes data, which also speeds subsequent reads,” said George Crump, Storage Switzerland. “Essentially, it prevents fragmentation from occurring at the file system level so data is being written sequentially and then read sequentially.

For Storage Switzerland, the advantages of Diskeeper have been clear: “Instead of Windows seeing a file existing as multiple pieces with each piece requiring its own dedicated I/O operation, it now sees nice, clean sequential files that only need minimal I/O to process,” said Crump in briefing note. “As a result, the server and underlying storage experience less I/O overhead to process files, which increases throughput so more data can be processed in less time.

Crump added that because Diskeeper is vendor agnostic, it has the capability to work across a range of storage systems, as well as across drive media types like SSD.

SAN technologies fail to address fragmentation at the logical disk layer, which is the primary reason SAN storage performance degrades over time,” said Brian Morin, SVP, global marketing, Condusiv. “The Diskeeper 15 Server prevents files from being broken apart into pieces before being written to disk or SSD in a non-sequential manner, eliminating fragmentation before it becomes an issue. The Storage Switzerland report validates that Diskeeper is, in Crump’s words, ‘an obvious choice for IT professionals looking to increase the performance of their environments’ and represents a new era of performance optimization to SAN storage.
