The Ultrastar He6 is a 6TB HDD manufactured by HGST, Inc., a Western Digital subsidiary. It is the world’s first hermetically sealed, helium-filled drive for massive scale-out environments. As helium is a lighter substance than air, the platters of this technology meet less resistance, thus generating less heat and using a reduced amount of power.

Even with the addition of helium and its benefits, vulnerabilities of HDDs still include the potential for electro-mechanical failure due to component and media damage, firmware corruption and other yet-to-be-discovered scenarios of data loss or device malfunction.
