IBM: Fiscal 3Q14 Financial Results

Storage decreasing for 13th consecutive quarter

IBM reports its 2014 third-quarter results for the three months ended September 30, 2014.

Once more, and at least for the 13th consecutive quarter, storage revenue is decreasing, this time by 6% Y/Y. The company will have to radically change its business model to be back to growth.

This decrease happens even if it saw strong contribution from its flash systems and Storewize portfolio. But this was more than offset by weakness in high-end disk and the continued wind down of its legacy OEM business.

Big Blue see value in the storage business shifting to software and for this quarter, its storage software grew. The current idea is to push its software-defined storage portfolio.

Tivoli revenue was up 3%, driven by security and storage software.

For the Systems and Technology division, revenue of $2.4 billion was down 15%. This reflects the product cycle of System z, and declines in Power, storage and System x where both Power and storage improved sequentially. IBM said taking actions to reposition its portfolio and maintain commitment to driving innovation in high-end systems and storage. We will see.
