Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Chooses Atlantis Computing

To increase storage performance and simplify IT management

Atlantis Computing, Inc., announced that the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH) NHS trust, one of the largest orthopaedic units in Europe, is using the Atlantis VDI solution to support its storage infrastructure.

The software-defined solution now supports 700 new thin clients, 100 laptops and 70 tablets, creating a 92% reduction in desktop login times and freeing up 30 minutes a day for clinicians.

The ROH is a specialist teaching hospital in the UK. It has a high demand level for its services, meaning its surgeons, doctors and nurses need to be able to work efficiently. The hospital has a growing number of patients who require specialist and compassionate care. With over 1,000 clinical and administrative employees, access to its numerous medical applications is key.

Previously, the ROH had three separate storage devices, which offered a total of 10TB of storage. However, the hospital was facing a looming crisis as the storage was time consuming to manage and was running out of capacity, resulting in the decision to adopt a VDI solution.

The ROH purchased Atlantis SDS with support from IT partner Illumit Ltd to provide ample desktop storage with the ability to expand capacity in the future. The Atlantis solution underpins all of the hospitals virtualised desktops whilst also supporting the ROH’s new remote access and BYOD strategies. Employees can access medical applications and files from personal mobile devices in minutes as the Atlantis software operates in RAM, improving productivity.

Mark Bemrose, network manager, ROH, said: “Previously, it used to take employees 15-20 minutes to boot up their computers and log in. With the Atlantis software, this process now only takes 90s. This time saving is hugely beneficial for the hospital’s clinicians who log in and out several times a day from different locations as they move between operating theatres, wards and offices. This time-saving enables our staff to work far more effectively and spend more time with their patients.

David Cumberworth, VP EMEA, Atlantis, said: “The ROH is a well-known and respected hospital for the high level of care it gives to all its patients. It is vital in an organisation like the ROH that employees are able to access important files and documents quickly. Our software delivers this and much more. The Atlantis solution has supported IT staff through simple management and has ultimately saved the hospital time and money which can be put into treating and caring for more patients across the country.
