This was accomplished in part with the use of the windmill server concept that allows each disk in the cold storage gear to hold 4TB of data, and each two unit system contains two levels of HDDs. This configuration allows for 4PB of cold storage in a rack, each storage head has 2PB attached, and there are two heads per rack. The disks are rarely spinning – perhaps one will at any given time. As a result, these use less power than the open compute racks filled with servers, and there’s no need to put electrical infrastructure on each row. Instead, power can be distributed across multiple racks.
