NetApp Assigned Three Patents

De-dupe, provisioning, managing clustered and non-clustered storage systems

Real-time deduplication utilizing
an electronic storage medium

NetApp, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,281,066) developed by Don Trimmer, Sunnyvale, CA, and Steven C. Miller, Livermore, CA, for a "system and method for real-time deduplication utilizing an electronic storage medium."

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "The present invention provides a system and method for eliminating duplicate data (de-duplication) in substantially real time using an electronic storage medium."

The patent application was filed on April 5, 2010 (12/754,162).

Provisioning data storage entities
with authorization settings

NetApp, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,276,191) developed by Gaurab Paul, and Vasantha Prabhu, Bangalore, India, for "provisioning data storage entities with authorization settings."

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "A method and system for generating authorization settings that indicate whether host administrators using a host-based storage-management application are authorized to perform provisioning operations on data storage entities residing on a data storage system are disclosed. Accordingly, a storage-management application receives from an administrator an authorization setting indicating on a per-user basis a set of provisioning operations which can be performed with a data storage entity via the storage-management application. The authorization settings are then communicated from the host-based storage-management application to the storage system where the data storage entity resides, and the authorization settings are stored. A storage-management application executing on any host can then utilize the authorization settings to control which users are allowed to interact with certain data storage entities, and what specific interactions (e.g., provisioning operations) are allowed."

The patent application was filed on April 30, 2008 (12/112,720).

Managing clustered and non-clustered storage systems

Netapp, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,271,556) developed by Raja Shekar, Ravindra Kumar, and Kartik Kumar, Bangalore, India, for a "method and system for managing clustered and non-clustered storage systems."

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: "Method and system for managing a storage environment having a cluster based storage system and a non-cluster based storage system is provided. A management application collects information regarding components of both the cluster based storage system and the non-cluster based storage system. A layout having a plurality of data structures is generated and maintained by the management application. The data structures include information regarding the components and their relationships with each other, if any. The layout is used for responding to user requests and presenting an integrated view of the storage environment on a display device with selectable options for selecting the cluster based storage system components and the non-cluster based storage system components."

The patent application was filed on Sept. 22, 2011 (13/241,000).
