This tool calculates user input data including backup data set size, backup windows, retention periods and disaster recover (DR) requirements to compare the alternatives of Data Domain, disk/VTL or tape. By experimenting with the input values, users can gain a basic understanding of some of the variables that impact data reduction ratios and the value Data Domain systems can provide in terms of reducing the storage footprint at local and DR sites, as well as reducing the bandwidth required to move data between them.

Our comments :
As the gain of dedup depends directly on the type of data, a calculator can help. But note that the ratio also depends on the number of the blocks or files used for the comparison with new ones. More you dedup and higher can be this ratio.
Nevertheless the use of a calculator is a good first approach.
Others dedup calculators can also be found:
- On NetApp web site at http://www.dedupecalc.com
- On the first page of the Exagrid web site
- In Excel format on a blog written by an EMC technical business consultant which doesn't disclose his name, at the following URL: http://thebackupblog.typepad.com/thebackupblog/files/dedupcalc.xls
