Rubrik's Converged Data Management platform is supposed to be the "industry's first solution to eliminate backup software", in fact the software-defined backup software being hidden into appliances forming a scale-out storage architecture for secondary storage, backup, not primary storage as many other companies.

The base 2U appliance is designed with commodity hardware, HDDs and SSDs and all the software (de-dupe, snapshots, replication, etc.). One to hundreds of boxes can be integrated, each with four nodes supporting several hundreds of VMs. When nodes are added, they are automatically identified and integrated. Data is stored in a single 'data lake' per se that can be searched by metadata and recovered based on a time-sliding mechanism.

Nothing was revealed concerning the protection of the data, but they are probably duplicated on one or more nodes like in common scale-out storage configuration without use of RAID.

Furthermore, an hybrid backup infrastructure is possible through gateway for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google cloud.

Rubrik stated it invents (Apple) Time Machine for cloud infrastructure to demonstrate the easy use of its solution, as we don't see any trace of CDP.

John W. Thompson commented: "No other solution delivers on-demand data access through the application lifecycle, from development and testing to backup and archive."

Starting at $100,000

Now through early access program and availability later this year.

100% channel-driven

Main customer
Langs Building Supply in Australia whose IT manager Matthew Day said: "Rubrik offers us a disruptive solution that simplifies our backup and recovery in the same way that Nutanix has for our primary environment."

Among them CommVault, EMC, Symantec and Veeam

Our Comments

With such names as John W. Thompson, Frank Slootman and Mark Leslie as angel investors, you have to look at this company with the idea to simplify data protection with scale-out storage, probably the first one for secondary storage, but in a world already full of companies offering backup and recovery software or solutions.
