Bitcasa Launches CloudFS, File System APIs for Branded Cloud

Free package include five end-users, 25GB of storage, 10,000 API calls/month

Bitcasa, Inc. announced the availability of  its CloudFS, a cloud file system APIs that give developers control of user data and brand experience.

Developers can leverage Bitcasa’s cloud infrastructure to deploy new applications.

Developers are increasingly looking to the cloud to help manage user data, and have traditionally had to choose between building their own secure storage systems on top of public cloud infrastructure – which is time consuming and difficult – or using a third party cloud service and surrendering their data and user experience,” says Bitcasa CEO, Brian Taptich. “Bitcasa CloudFS effectively solves this dilemma for developers and gives them the convenience and simplicity of customizable APIs while maintaining control of their users and related data.

Since announcing plans for the platform in May 2014, the company has had more than 7,000 developers register for its developer program.

The scale of the file system in Bitcasa’s consumer cloud storage service is unprecedented, and provides a solid base for developers to build on,” says Ashish Nadkarni, file and storage analyst, IDC.

Early applications built using the CloudFS beta have ranged from a streaming radio show, to photography studio file sharing, and video website upload and delivery applications. A large number of development shops have also registered to use CloudFS for client projects.

Bitcasa CloudFS is a significant enhancement to our SimpleECM document workflow platform, offering our customers seamless and secure multi-platform access to their invoices and other important documents,” said Karl Etzel, president and CEO, Document Capture Technologies, a Bitcasa CloudFS beta customer. “CloudFS not only provides secure storage, but it also offers automatic backup and versioning that gives our customers additional peace of mind. Integrating CloudFS was simple and efficient, allowing us to implement Bitcasa’s scalable storage platform in under two weeks.

Bitcasa is offering developers a free test package so they can prototype applications with five end-users, 25GB of storage, 10,000 API calls a month, and basic support. CloudFS also includes three paid tiers and custom pricing options for high volume applications.

Bitcasa’s Cloud Storage Platform
The CloudFS APIs complete the company’s storage platform, which also includes its Drive service, which allows telcos, OEMs, MSPs and VARs to offer their customers branded cloud storage services.

Described as an ‘iCloud in a Box,’ the Drive solution gives customers all the storage, streaming, security and sharing functionality of the consumer cloud storage product and pre-built mobile apps in a white-labeled solution which they control.

Both the CloudFS and Drive feature user controlled encryption and zero-knowledge storage. The platform’s caching technology and regional storage capabilities further enhance performance, and offers additional flexibility.
