84% Less TCO for Crossroads StrongBox Compared to HDD Unified Storage

Storage consultant Brad Johns reports.

Crossroads Systems, Inc. announced that Brad Johns Consulting, LLC published research highlighting the significant cost reductions that its StrongBox offers.

The study reports that the combination of StrongBox and LTO-6 reduces the total cost of storage ownership by 84%, when compared to the equivalent amount of unified storage with the latest HDD technology.

For this study, Brad Johns, a storage industry consultant with more than 30 years of IBM experience, assessed acquisition, support and power consumption costs for a dual copy petabyte archive over a 10-year period. The study concluded that the combination of StrongBox and LTO-6 tape technology costs $1.1 million compared to $7 million for the unified storage solution. This is more than an 84% reduction in TCO. Additionally, the energy efficiency of the StrongBox-based solution is validated by the study’s findings that StrongBox can reduce energy costs by up to 95%.

Below is a breakdown of the study’s cost comparisons:

2PB Environment TCO Over 10 Years
StrongBox Solution / Unified Storage / Percent Savings

  • Energy / $10,000 / $197,000 /     95% Less
  • Support / $536,000 / $1,437,000 / 62% Less
  • Acquisition Costs / $578,000 / $5,443,000 / 89% Less
  • TOTAL / $1,124,000 / $7,077,000 / 84% Less

"StrongBox is a compelling solution that could substantially reduce overall storage costs for customers with large and growing archive requirements," Johns said. "For many storage workloads, the intelligent policy management provided by StrongBox will support file server type performance levels while also providing much lower costs. In addition, StrongBox incorporates features that are very important for long-term archive such as policy-driven data integrity, data protection and replication features."
