Reference Architectures From Commvault With Cisco

Pre-optimised solution for simplified backup, recovery and archiving

Commvault Systems, Inc. launched Reference Architectures with alliance partner Cisco Technology, Inc. to give customers and partners an easy-to-buy, pre-optimised and validated solution for simplified data protection and recovery using company’s software deployed on the Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) infrastructure.

The company also announced support into Cisco’s HyperFlex hyperconvergence system to help organisations protect data workloads and applications across virtualised and cloud infrastructures. The new reference architectures and firm’s support of HyperFlex were both announced at Cisco Live in Las Vegas, NV.

Through the Reference Architectures, which provide a set of guidelines and best delivery methods for particular technology deployments within an IT service catalogue, customers can now leverage an all-in-one solution with a single, unified backup, recovery and archive platform that lowers TCO and has the flexibility to scale from terabytes to petabytes. As a result, customers can eliminate the cost and hassle of deploying multiple single-purpose appliances with a modernised data infrastructure that provides insight and value to the business and keeps up with the pace of today’s data growth demands.

We have had significant success using Commvault software in combination with our Cisco UCS and Nimble infrastructure to turn our data into a significant strategic asset for our organisation,” said Matloob Hussain, engineer, ICT Infrastructure, Xentrall ICT Services. “Since the original rollout, we have upgraded to the 11th version of Commvault’s data platform, which has resulted in backup times becoming quicker and archive recall speeds that are on a par with accessing un-archived files, across our environment.

The Reference Architectures, which enable customers to deploy quickly, reduce implementation risks and accelerate time to value, are available for select firm’s customers and Cisco partners.

“When we look for solutions to our customers’ important backup, recovery and management needs, both on-premise and outside in hybrid cloud scenarios, we not only require exceptional technologies, but also solutions built on partnerships by trusted industry leaders,” said Tom Cahill, VP, product and partner management, CDW Corp.Through their new reference architectures, Commvault and Cisco are going to make it easier and faster for CDW to deliver the solutions that add value for our customers.

“Today’s launch of the new reference architectures and our support into Cisco HyperFlex bring trusted industry leaders together with complimentary technologies for the benefit of customers and partners,” said Ralph Nimergood, VP, WW channels and alliances, Commvault. “We are proud to team up with Cisco to address real customer pain points around ease of purchase and deployment in the form of reference architectures to reduce unnecessary hardware acquisition costs, optimise mission critical applications and limit the time to implement the right-sized solution.

Firm’s supports Cisco HyperFlex
In addition to the launch of Reference Architectures for Cisco, the company announced support for HyperFlex, the firm’s hyperconverged system combining compute, storage and networking into an easy-to-use platform built on UCS infrastructure.

Through this support, the company provides data protection and recovery of data workloads and applications running across virtualised and cloud infrastructures on HyperFlex.

Customer benefits include:

  • Increased automation – The software detects and classifies new VMs, and adds them to the proper backup policy. It can also automatically detect idle VMs, and safely archive them to reclaim valuable production resources. A built-in workflow engine allows additional administrator-specified automation.

  • Scalability – The software automatically load-balances across multiple backup servers to deliver a modern scale-out experience to growing data centres. End-to-end deduplication reduces network traffic and storage space.

  • VM specific support – With the software’s integration with VMWare APIs, storage owners can avoid installing agents in every VM, thereby reducing overhead. Thanks to backup policies that can be set based on VMWare metadata and a snap-in for VSphere, the management burden is eased. Full VM or individual file restore options save time and provides flexible recovery options to meet unique needs.

The company helps customers on UCS protect the lifeblood of their businesses with support across enterprise applications. These integrations deliver application-aware backup and recovery that is simplified and safer because it is automated and standardised, eliminating scripts and manual processes. For primary storage arrays with hardware snapshot capabilities, like those in Cisco’s converged infrastructure stacks, IntelliSnap technology can be leveraged to speed backup and recovery so customers get exactly the right protection for every application, then the data can be moved to HyperFlex and UCS for retention.

With company’s support of more than twenty leading cloud storage platforms and devices, customers can accelerate backup and recovery regardless of their preference – on premises, hybrid or public cloud.
