NEC Completes M-Series SAN Storage Family Up to 3PB

Entry level 20TB system starts at $17,120

NEC Corporation of America announced its M-Series SAN storage family, which is designed to support consolidated and virtualized environments.

The Mx10-Series provides a range of SAN storage options for the price and performance needs of every environment. The M110 is the entry-level system for businesses that need SAN storage. The M310 and M510 offer scalability and performance for low-end to mid-tier and emerging enterprise businesses. The high-performance M710 provides more than 3PB of capacity and performance resources for demanding mid-to-high-end enterprise and cloud computing environments.

The Mx10 family delivers up to four times higher performance than the previous generation M-Series SAN storage1. Internal NEC tests using the SPC Benchmark 1 (SPC-1) with FC delivered 100,000 IO/s on the M310 system compared to 25,000 IO/s on the M300. This performance increase is achieved by accelerating the back-end disk interface from 6 Gb/s to 12Gb/s; supporting front-end 16Gb FC; and upgrading to new Xeon control processors.

NEC’s M-Series is already a surprisingly and broadly capable offering that covers users from entry to enterprise across multiple application types with capabilities from auto-tiering, hybrid cache and flash, to significant scale,” said Mark Peters, senior analyst, ESG. “Its latest enhancements span both the necessary – such as multiples in performance and scale – and the desired – such as QoS management from a single screen – that enhance the M-Series as a storage platform worth considering.

The M-Series storage offers improvements in mid-range scalability. The mid-range M310 scales to 480 drives – an increase of more than 300% in the total number of disk drives that are supported; and expands the maximum capacity of the M310 by 2.5 times to more than 758TB per system in a RAID-5 configuration. Its scalability ensures a smooth and more trouble-free path for future growth. Investing in systems that allow incremental additions of storage over time extends the longevity of the initial investment and reduces the cost of storage expansion.

The M-Series systems have an increased hybrid storage capability by providing 1.6TB flash drives. Expanding the flash memory capability allows users to exploit flash-related capabilities, such as data tiering and cache management for larger data environments.

The new M-Series storage solutions help our customers achieve greater performance and cost-effectiveness in their cloud and consolidated environments,” said Gideon Senderov, director advanced storage, NEC Corporation of America. “Innovative NEC software and hardware functionalities enable NEC to solve storage problems for both entry-level customers and the most demanding enterprises alike.

Software functionalities set the M-Series SAN storage apart from other storage providers. In addition to the new Mx10 storage family, NEC added enhanced software capabilities that simplify the management of cloud and consolidated environments. The VMware vCenter Operations software tool provides simplified performance management through a single window, enabling virtualized server and storage performance analysis in a single pane of glass.

The I/O flow control software enhances the Mx10-Series QoS capabilities by ensuring higher priority applications get stabilized service at the logical disk level. Important logical disk group throughput is protected by assigning upper and lower limits that ensure higher priority applications get a minimum service level and lower priority applications do not impact higher priority application performance.

The M-Series systems are available.

List pricing for an entry level 20TB system starts at $17,120.
