Dell/Terascala HPC Storage Solution Updated to Scalable Architecture

With Lustre and TeraOS

Terascala, Inc. announced updates to the Dell | Terascala HPC Storage Solution (HSS), a HPC system that helps customers manage the influx of data in technical computing environments.

The improvements are designed to meet growing customer demands for integrated storage solutions from Terascala and Dell.

Research and higher education institutions require efficient HPC environments that can scale quickly to support enormous data sets. The HSS allows customers to meet storage challenges with a fully supported, high performance, and cost-effective parallel file system that is easy to deploy, configure, and manage.

Software and hardware improvements to the HSS include the software stack with Lustre parallel file system version 2.1.6 plus the latest version of TeraOS (v5.3.1) for appliance performance and reliability management.

Organizations benefit from increased performance to maximize their HPC infrastructures with new storage arrays that sport a quad port 12Gb SAS interface, compared to 6Gb SAS interface in the previous Dell PowerVault MD32xx arrays. The appliance peak read performance is 10.7GB/s, up 59.7% over the previous generation; the peak write performance is 6.09GB/s, up 74%. Moreover, the hardware stack performance has been enhanced by changing the metadata target (MDT) and object storage target (OST) arrays from the Dell MD32xx line to the new MD34xx series.

The two companies collaborate to upgrade the HSS storage appliance line typically twice per year to provide the best price, performance, and latest software features to Dell’s customers. The upgraded appliances are available from Dell.

Dell is focused on partnering with the best in the business to create very high throughput appliances that are required for customers’ technical computing environments,” noted Neil Klosterman, Dell, Inc.‘s HPC storage product manager. “The upgraded HSS 5.5 storage appliance has TeraOS validated on Dell hardware through rigorous testing by Dell HPC Engineering and Terascala. This will ensure that superior high-performance computing technology is available to our research and academia customers for mission-critical work.”

In this competitive marketplace, to be nimble, implies providing continuous innovation,” stated Alan Swahn, Terascala’s VP marketing. “This upgraded storage appliance is a great example of Dell being nimble and listening to their customers. We are pleased to be a Dell partner and provide the software stack for their latest roll in and run HPC storage appliance line.
