The appliance can be purchased through CommVault’s partners Arrow Electronics, Inc. and Avnet Technology Solutions in North America.

Offered in different scalable configurations, this all-in-one backup appliance integrates a validated, performance-optimized configuration featuring tested hardware from NetApp with CommVault backup software, pre-installed into a backup solution.

The collaboration with NetApp began with the joint development of NetApp SnapProtect, an array-based snapshot management solution that accelerates and simplifies data protection and recovery for NetApp Data ONTAP environments. The introduction of the Backup Appliance extends the partnership to leverage the capabilities of E-Series arrays with Simpana software.

The appliance enables a quick start-up and deployment across a customer’s IT environment. It provides data protection, recovery, and native copy management for physical and virtual servers, laptops and desktops, and the Simpana platform’s capabilities on file system, application and database environments. In addition, the appliance offers integrated replication, reporting, encryption and file archiving, fulfilling many of the specialized needs that in the past required a range of different solutions, making it for organizations of all sizes and configurations. In addition, customers can add Simpana Solution Sets for VM Cloud Management, Email Archive, Snapshot Management and Endpoint protection without requiring a separate installation.

The appliance features global (source and target) deduplication and can be deployed in a parallel or grid architecture for higher availability and greater flexibility, manageability, and scale. Parallel or partitioned deduplication allows users to combine two deduplication pools into one, which allows twice as much data to be commonly deduplicated, reducing appliance sprawl. The appliance also provides software load balancing and failover capabilities to complement the resiliency of the hardware. An appliance can replicate to another appliance at a remote site for DR use cases. The turnkey nature of the appliance and its packaging – from the purchase process to implementation and support – makes the purchase, installation and deployment of this solution simple from power-up to backup in less than an hour.

Available as a single package through distribution partners, the appliance also includes CommVault’s support for both software and hardware.

The demand for appliance-based approaches to solving customer backup and archive problems is growing and we believe the expansion of our partnership with NetApp to provide this solution will allow both companies to solve the most pressing challenges our enterprise and midmarket customers are facing,” said Ralph Nimergood, VP of WW channels and alliances, CommVault. “The new appliance provides CommVault customers with a cost-effective technology choice for backup and recovery, and supports our channel partners in their efforts to market unique solutions that drive business value and market opportunity.”

The appliance is available in North America with an MSRP of $82,189 for an 18TB appliance.
