Coho Data DataStream With Flash Hardware for In-Line Transcoding for Media Workflows

Delivers in-line transcoding via a Docker-deployed microservice.

Coho Data, Inc. announced an integrated solution for media production workflows that delivers in-line transcoding via a Docker-deployed microservice on its high performance, web-scale storage to streamline required infrastructure and deliver significant cost savings.

This solution converges the processing and storage of creative data into a single system to accelerate the production pipeline. DataStream solution combines the flash hardware with the company’s data-centric software architecture to deliver high-performance scale-out NFS storage that can now also support applications or services in Docker containers. With this solution, media and entertainment customers are able to deploy media services like transcoding on top of core storage services, which include HA, thin snapshots, compression, and flash-optimized performance, directly in the DataStream platform. By converging these media services into Coho Data’s scalable storage platform, creative professionals can accelerate their media workflows and pipeline to dramatically increase efficiency. More importantly, this eliminates the cost of multiple systems when testing new products, as well as the time and bandwidth required to transport the workload between storage and transcoding servers.

Coho Data is focused on delivering simple building blocks that organizations can use to create data-centric infrastructure for fast, flexible access and utilization of their data.

Andrew Warfield, CTO and co-founder, Coho Data, explains, “Allowing our storage to be extended with containerized microservices means that our customers have the ability to efficiently bring their workflows directly to their data at scale. I’m very excited at the emerging ability of Coho’s architecture to incorporate programmable computation directly within the storage system, and the way that it is solving real problems in various media and entertainment customer environments, including media production.

At the NAB Show, Coho Data demonstrates a transcoding application as an example media microservice. In the demo, content will be ingested into a two-node DataStream 1000h cluster and a rule-based policy triggered by the media file type will automatically begin the transcoding service. This service is containerized in Docker and runs on the DataStream alongside core storage services and other microservices, enabling customers to drive more value out of their data infrastructure investments. Additionally, to illustrate the scalable 40GbE connectivity of the platform, an example of multiple 4k playback streams will be demonstrated.

The Coho DataStream product line is used in large enterprise private cloud environments.
