Data silos have always been power hungry in their own right. The added requirement for air conditioning has meant that the cost of ownership is high.

This is a part of the solution, as Ben Pearce, sales and marketing director, GB Labs, explains: “These new Eco archives are highly energy efficient – as much as 45% better than the previous generation. Plus, as they are cooler running, ongoing costs are lower. What’s more, Echo 36 (Eco) can host up-to 192TB from a single 4U chassis, a considerable saving on rack space and energy usage. These savings are important and come on top of the comparatively low initial investment.

1PB Price Point
Pearce comments: “Not only is Echo 36 (Eco) the most cost-effective nearline storage that we’ve ever produced, but it also has the lowest environmental footprint and it’s the largest capacity system in our history. We can now offer a petabyte of fast tier-2 storage for under $300,000, which is unprecedented.

Archive Storage
As project sizes and data rates increase, broadcasters are having to re-assess the scale of their media archives. Until now large capacity archives have either lacked the performance for near-instant file retrieval and full resolution video previews or have been simply too expensive.

Pearce remarks: “Petabyte-sized archives are becoming ever more commonplace, especially with the arrival of 4K. The new Echo nearline is a very high capacity, cost-effective solution. It’s an almost infinitely expandable and scalable storage network.

Cloud and Local Workflow
Echo 36 (Eco) is suited to use in a cloud environment, either for remote point-to-point data replication, or as an online shared backup. Functionality pre-programmed into the Core v3 OS makes storage cloud-ready from the outset. In local networks, it can write data to four LTO drives concurrently at full speed using Space LTO for an archiving workflow.

Data Management
It has more functionality, with data replication, and restoration tools built-in. The system also supports asset management software for a transparent data workflow. As a DR system, the systems can be utilized for online editing until tier-1 storage is fully restored.
