PCIe 3.0 With NVMe SDD From Intel at $1/GB
Two models at 400GB and 1.2TB, for consumers, not enterprises only
By Jean Jacques Maleval | April 10, 2015 at 3:01 pmIntel just released 750 series SSDs at less than $1/GB new SSDs with PCIe Gen3x4 interface and NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory express), being together the best technologies to get the fastest transfer rate on any storage devices (see table below).
NVMe improves both random and sequential performance over SATA-based drives† by reducing latency, enabling high levels of parallelism, and streamlining the storage command set.
The firm stated that: “750 series delivers greater than four times the performance of SATA-based SSDs.”
There was already some PCIe SSDs at this low price range but not with NVMe that appeared last year and will have great future, not only for enterprises, as here Intel offers also the PCIe/NVMe product for the first time to consumers.
It’s the Intel’s highest performing SSD, for use in client PC storage devices and workstations.
There are two models at 400GB and 1.2TB, but nothing at 800GB.
Intel’s proprietary 18-channel CH29AE41AB0 controller which was sed by their P series drives, is at the heart of SSD 750 Series.
Here the company uses 20nm 128Gb MLC NAND chips from Intel and partner Micron
The drives are available in 2.5-inch form factor with relatively high height, 15mm, or half-height half-length (HHHL) add-in PCIe 3.0 card.
Intel also announced the availability of the less costly but slower SSD 535 Series based on 16nm MLC for clients with capacity from 120GB to 480GB in M.2 (80mm) and 2.5-inch form factors. The 6Gb SATA 480GB model is sold on Amazon at $285 ($0.7/GB).
