China’s Longsys With New Line of PCIe SSDs

"At same cost as SATA SSD"

Shenzhen longsys Electronics Co., Ltd., storage vendor in China, is launching a new line of PCle SSDs, the P800 series, which will be available in May at the same cost as SATA SSD.

The new P800 series, which adopts 15nm TLC NAND flash and the Marvell control chip, boasts read-write speeds of up to 700MB/s and 300MB/s, respectively.

Furthermore, its two forms and specifications, namely M.2 and AIC (Add in Card), provide capacity of 120GB and 240GB.

In this era of big data, individuals and enterprises have an increasing demand for storage, and the demand for SSD is growing at a yearly rate of 20%.

Irresistible Trend of PCle SSD
Compared with SATA, PCle has a higher transmission bandwidth and less access delay. The maximum theoretical transmission speed of SATA III is 600MB/s and that of PCle Gen2 x1 is 500MB/s, with the maximum theoretical transmission speed of PCle Gen3 x1 reaching 1GB/s, twice of the interface speed of SATA III. The theoretical speed of PCIe Gen3 x4 reaches 4GB/s at its highest.

Apple’s Mac series notebook is already equipped with PCle SSD. Furthermore, the main chips in Intel’s latest Skylake platform support a PCle NVMe channel. It is clear that the biggest hardware sellers and chipmakers are preparing for when PCle will take the place of SATA.

Better Price of PCIe vs. SATA III to Drive Consumer Adoption
The high performance of PCle SSD is eye-catching, but the retail price of more than RMB 700 for current 128GB models has dampened consumer demand. Longsys’ new P800 series, with its higher capacity, will be priced at the same level as SATA SSD. This cost advantage will enables consumers’ to upgrade their notebooks from HDD to high performance PCle SSD.

Experience In Market and Industry Relationships Guarantee Quality
Longsys is dedicated not only to making the price of its P800 PCle SSD competitive with the SATA SSD, but also to maintaining its quality. Having been focused on the storage field for 17 years, the company has established a cooperative relationship with its upstream factory, which gives it a stable and superior NAND flash source.

In 2015, for example, the company entered into strategic cooperation with international control chip manufacturer Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Its 28nm technique is adopted for Marvell’s control chips, giving it greater cost and technical advantages over the 55nm manufacturing techniques of Silicon Motion and Phison. Furthermore, Marvell has extended the low density parity efficacy of its LDPC technology to its SSD control chip, which has a correction capability that is three times higher than that of traditional BCH, better strengthening the durability and stability of TLC. This, along with the introduction of the DRAM-less framework, further optimizes SSD costs.

With these advantages, longsys can complete the firmware design, hardware design and packaging design independently on the basis of the control chip source code from Marvell, opening up the interface to enable clients to create more market value.

Finally, longsys has formed a complete production chain from R&D to finished products and boasts a range of SSD models including S400 series, industrial I800 series and enterprise DC3200 series.
