Scality Releasing First Open Source REST-based Interface

For block-based applications

Scality, Inc. announced the first open source REST Block Driver, expanding the horizons of storage interconnect, scalability, and performance.

It was demonstrating it at the OpenStack Summit taking place on November 3-7, 2015 in Paris, France.

The REST Block Driver is software that deploys on any Linux-based server and exposes a block device to applications, with REST-based, CDMI-compliant transport to backend storage. The driver currently supports basic block storage connectivity to the Scality RING storage platform through solutions like OpenStack Nova and KVM, though both front end and back end connectivity are designed to be extensible to support other protocols and data interaction methodologies.

The Scality REST Block Driver will enabled us to instantiate hundred plus petabyte file systems protected by erasure coding via the Scality RING,” said Gary Grider, HPC division leader at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). “The ability to share block devices without the need for a FC SAN, using REST/HTTP on inexpensive scale out 10+ GbE/IB technology, is an important building block for us. LANL had input on the design of the REST Block Driver, have been actively testing it, and will continue to invest in the community that forms around it. We think this technology has great potential over traditional architectures.”

We’re committed to technical innovation, the open source community, and proving the power of software-defined,” said Giorgio Regni, CTO, Scality. “With the novel approach of the REST Block Driver, we intend to make it easier for customers to use Scality (as well as other storage technologies), as they build OpenStack clouds and infrastructures that support broad workloads and limitless scale.”

The REST Block Driver project is available for download at open Git repository.
