IBM Elastic Storage Server for Big Data

Enhanced with new levels of IBM Spectrum

IBM Elastic Storage Server for big data is enhanced with new levels of IBM Spectrum Scale.

  • IBM Elastic Storage Server (ESS) combines IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM Spectrum Scale RAID technology with IBM Power System servers, storage enclosures, and disks.
  • Includes the latest Spectrum Scale V4.2 and Spectrum Scale RAID V4.2
  • Delivers analytic and technical computing storage and data services for big data elastic storage workloads
  • Delivers simplified administration of Spectrum Scale
  • Offers efficient storage for big data workloads
  • Helps to speed big data analytics

ESS is now updated to include the latest level of Spectrum Scale V4.2 software. With this enhancement, the ESS participates in most of the functions of Spectrum Scale V4.2, including:

  • Improved provisioning and administrator productivity with a new GUI
  • Management of resource contention with QoS prioritization and monitoring
  • Storage portfolio visibility with IBM Spectrum Control integration
  • Unified file and object storage with integrated data analytics
  • Policy-based migration to the optimum storage pool and active archive
  • Storage space savings with compression
  • Asynchronous DR remote replication capability
  • Improved design for faster, easier, and more reliable workflows with native Hadoop support, multiprotocol NAS, and proven enterprise capabilities
  • Highly available read and write caching can accelerate applications

ESS is an integrated storage building block solution for a Spectrum Scale cluster. ESS consists of seven 5146-GSx and 5146-GLx models.

These models are constructed in one of the following ways:

  • Two IBM Power S822L servers (8247-22L), including varying quantities of EXP24S storage drawers (#EL1S)
  • Two Power S822L servers (8247-22L) paired with varying quantities of DCS3700 storage expansion drawers

Key prerequisites

  • An ESS Server consisting of 5146-GSx or 5146-GLx models
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 for Power
  • IBM Spectrum Scale V4.2 server license
  • IBM Spectrum Scale RAID V4.2
  • IBM Support for xCAT V2

Planned availability date: January 29, 2016
