Datos IO: Directed Availability of Andromeda

Distributed data protection software

Datos IO, Inc.‘s CEO Tarun Thakur posted this blog, announcing Directed Availability of their scale-out storage/backup/recovery product, called Andromeda:

Today, I am proud to announce the Directed Availability release (Andromeda) of Datos IO RecoverX, industry-first distributed data protection software purpose-built for the next-generation 3rd Platform era. With this release, also comes a brand new website, new product videos, and a community meetup presentation.

The journey thus far has been nothing short of rewarding, with its full share of countless sleepless nights. But, nothing beats the pleasure of this moment: today marks the culmination of nearly 20 months of hard work in building our first product, RecoverX. Yet, it is only the beginning of our mission: to enable enterprises to protect, recover and manage their data at scale over its lifecycle.

We are honored and thankful to nearly a dozen early adopters and customers who gave us an opportunity to validate product features and value proposition through our Early Access Program. We spent close to 6 months testing our software in enterprise environments across the following verticals: security, eCommerce, retail, and financial services. We have been sharing our learnings from these EAP deployments and also debunking myths along the way, such as: “Database native replication is good enough” and “Availability zones are good enough“. And finally, our customers have said the following about our product: “Recovery speeds are mind-blowing”, “Datos IO user-interface and workflows simplifies a very difficult problem“, and “Orchestrated recovery makes my life very easy.”

According to industry analysts at Gartner and IDC, the data management market opportunity with 3rd Platform infrastructure is forecasted to be ~$20 billion by 2019 with a CAGR of more than 32%. TechTarget recently highlighted how critical the need for next-generation backup and recovery for the data-centric era is becoming.

This fundamental shift raises critical issues in the lifecycle of data management. Traditional backup and recovery products were originally designed for small-scale databases, tape-based storage media, and legacy database architectures for on-premise deployments. But customers now need a new way of protecting and managing applications deployed on modern database architectures.

Our industry-defining, multi-platform RecoverX product provides applications admins and IT teams with the most comprehensive view of their scale-out databases in a single pane of glass view.

With our Andromeda release, RecoverX brings forward 4 main features:

  • Scale-out software for availability and performance
  • Scalable versioning to protect data at any granularity and any point in time
  • Reliable recovery to recover in minutes not hours
  • Industry-first semantic deduplication to save up to 70% on secondary storage costs.

These novel features are the result of some of the hardest distributed systems problems and challenges that the team has addressed.

To give you a sense of the sheer magnitude of adoption of scale-out databases, I encourage you all to take a look at this new infographic that was created using survey responses from over 200 application architects and database administrators. It highlights the critical need for scalable backup and recovery.

On a final note, the opportunity for Datos IO is unparalleled. The value for vast secondary data repositories extends beyond recovery: the data can be mined, indexed, queried and transformed to add value to corporate IT and information management processes. The possibilities are limitless. The winners of the next decade of infrastructure era will be the companies that are solving hard infrastructure problems and enabling customer value by helping them transition onto the next-generation data centric era. Welcome aboard and see you at Boötes.
