Mark Davis CEO, ClusterHQ

Former Virsto CEO

ClusterHQ, The Data People for Docker, announced the appointment of Mark Davis, founder and former CEO of software-defined storage vendor Virsto Software, as CEO.

ClusterHQ Davis He has served as ClusterHQ’s chairman since June 2014.

He succeeds founding CEO Luke Marsden, who will continue as CTO and head of product.

Mark has been instrumental to the development of ClusterHQ, and we are very pleased that he has accepted the chief executive position as we move into a period of rapid technology innovation and business development,” said Marsden. “His progressive vision and extensive experience in the data center infrastructure market will serve ClusterHQ and its partners well.”

Davis co-founded Virsto Software, an early leader in the software-defined storage market, and led the company through three rounds of venture capital funding prior to its acquisition by VMware in 2013. He previously served as CEO of Creekpath Systems through its acquisition by Opsware (now HP), and held VP positions at several start-ups, including Evolve Software where he was a key player in an IPO and ConvergeNet Technologies where he was instrumental in its $340 million acquisition by Dell. Before beginning his career of leadership in high-growth, venture-backed start-ups, he was a marketing executive at StorageTek, Sun Microsystems and Oracle.

He currently serves on the board of directors for Talena and is an advisor and angel investor to several start-up companies and start-up accelerators.

ClusterHQ announced Flocker 0.1, the container solution for reliably running databases, key-value stores and queues inside Docker containers in August 2014. An open-source volume and container manager, Flocker is a software that solves the operational challenges that come from running data-backed services inside containers. It allows developers to define their application as a set of connected Docker containers, deploy and then migrate them along with their data between hosts, even when in different data centers.

ClusterHQ is the only company solving data portability issues for Linux containers. Customers, partners, and technology experts have repeatedly told us that lack of adequate data management is emerging as a crucial obstacle to widespread deployment of Docker,” said Davis. “I look forward to working closely with Luke and the rest of the team to help drive the company’s expansion and the growth of the Docker market.”
