HDS Federal Next Generation Long-Term Data Preservation Platform

Using BD-R or M-Disc optical discs

Hitachi Data Systems Federal Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), today released Hitachi Digital Preservation Platform (HDPP), the next generation long-term data preservation solution that allows federal agencies to preserve and archive mission-critical data indefinitely.

HDDP is an optical storage solution that uses existing Blu-ray and eventually M-DISC technology to preserve the nation’s most valuable resource, its information. It lets federal agencies access their data whenever they want, no matter how long it is stored, at lower TCO.

The explosive growth of digital information and the proliferation of media formats poses a long-term storage challenge for federal agencies,” said Mike Tanner, president and CEO, HDS Federal. “To fulfill regulatory requirements, agencies are required to archive the data they generate and collect anywhere from five to over 100 years, while others have mandates that require data to be preserved forever.

To comply with federal mandates such as the presidential memorandum – managing government records, which requires U.S. government agencies to store and safeguard electronic records for as long as needed, HDPP allows long-term storage of 50 years using Blu-ray, and eventually up to 1,000 years using M-DISC media. These optical media solutions ensure compatibility as data formats continue to evolve, longevity across generations of technology, and continued retrieval and use for the life of the Republic.

Most of our data is highly sensitive and must be properly safeguarded,” said Dylan Riley, director, office of innovation, U.S. Naval Air Systems Command, China Lake. “Media and IT options related to the storage and handling of that data tend to be very limited. Writable optical media remains a preferred technology in many cases because of the significant longevity and durability of the media.

In addition to alleviating pain points caused by forced data migrations, enterprise-quality optical discs ensure that agencies can safely preserve data for decades because of their proven survivability, including resistance to water, dust, electromagnetic events, and storage environments that have high heat and humidity.
