General Electronics Assigned Patent

Stacked film optical storage device

General Electronics Co., Niskayuna, NY, has been assigned a patent (8,524,348) developed by four co-inventors for a “stacked film optical storage device and method of manufacture.”

The co-inventors are Xiaolei Shi, Schenectady, NY, Peter William Lorraine, Niskayuna, NY, Victor Petrovich Ostroverkhov, Ballston Lake, NY, and Ri-an Zhao, Niskayuna, NY.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A storage device includes a substrate layer, made of a moldable non-photopolymer plastic substrate and having a servo layer, adjoined to a stacked film structure that is constructed of multiple functional films, having data layers, with spacer film(s) disposed between each of the functional films. Methods of manufacturing the storage device include using a roll-to-roll system to adhere thin spacer film extrusions between the multiple functional film extrusions so as to construct the stacked film structure. An additional method uses an application of functional film coating to thin spacer films and a roll-to-roll system.”

The patent application was filed on April 30, 2012 (13/459,840).
