NetApp Extends Relationship With VMware

Following more than decade-long alliance

NetApp, Inc. is extending its more than a decade-long alliance with VMware, Inc. to help customers transition to an IT future that is increasingly software defined and embraces cloud computing.

In software-defined storage (SDS), NetApp is forging a deeper technology relationship with VMware to accelerate software-defined data center deployments as a foundational step to the hybrid cloud.

At VMworld 2014, NetApp was announced as a design partner for VMware Virtual Volumes, the new storage architecture for software-defined data center approaches. Additionally, NetApp and VMware continue their commitment to working together on application deployment and accelerating cloud desktop deployment. The companies are partnering on development with VMware Horizon to help enterprises move applications and desktops to the cloud, and by doing so delivering them as a managed service to customers, enabling total cost reduction of desktop ownership.

As organizations move to software-defined service delivery within the hybrid cloud, optimal storage and data management will be at the foundation for success. NetApp shares a vision with VMware to enable IT to break down the physical barriers that bind data to specific hardware and enable greater operational efficiency, availability, and lower cost.

NetApp delivers software-defined storage today with clustered Data ONTAP, OnCommand management, and FlexArray software. These technologies, combined with VMware solutions such as vSphere and VMware vCloud Suite, enable data to travel across clouds toward a mutual vision for an era of hybrid cloud.

Organizations use the joint technology to virtualize business applications, enable mobile workforces, and move to the cloud, whether private, public, or hybrid implementations.

Tom Georgens, COB and CEO, NetApp, said: “Global customers look to NetApp and VMware to deliver the technologies and capabilities needed for the hybrid cloud. Our companies have a proven legacy of working together to deliver an IT environment that helps organizations accelerate their responsiveness to business challenges to drive competitive edge. NetApp storage solutions have been built on the same principles as SDS since the beginning. Our approach is to deliver the richest storage management on the broadest range of platforms.

Pat Gelsinger, CEO, VMware, said: “NetApp and VMware have a long history of innovating and delivering solutions that provide customers with the tremendous value embedded in a software-defined future. NetApp is an important partner in helping us achieve our vision to deliver next generation enterprise IT solutions for the mobile-cloud era.”
