Oracle Assigned Four Patents

Storage system and method for calibrating same, striping rows of data across logical units of storage with affinity for columns, standby storage system to detect health of cluster of storage servers, processor-bus-connected flash storage paging device

Storage system and method for calibrating same
Oracle America, Redwood City, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,614,935) developed by Faramarz Mahnad, Brookline, MA, for “data storage system and method for calibrating same.”

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “Disclosed herein are aspects of optical tape technology, tape manufacturing, and tape usage. Methods and systems of tape technology disclose optical tape media including: configurations, formulations, markings, and structure; optical tape manufacturing methods, systems, and apparatus methods and systems including: curing processes, coating methods, embossing, drums, testing, tracking alignment stamper strip; optical tape methods and systems including: pick up head adapted for the disclosed optical tape; and optical tape uses including optical storage media devices for multimedia applications.”

The patent application was filed on Dec. 16, 2009 (12/639,200).

Striping rows of data across logical units of storage with affinity for columns
Oracle International, Redwood Shores, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,627,006) developed by four co-inventors for a method, device, and computer readable medium “for striping rows of data across logical units of storage with an affinity for columns.

The co-inventors are Cetin Ozbutun, Atherton, CA, Dmitry Potapov, Emerald Hills, CA, Kirk Bradley, San Francisco, CA, and Juan Loaiza, Woodside, CA.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A method, device, and computer readable medium for striping rows of data across logical units of storage with an affinity for columns is provided. Alternately, a method, device, and computer readable medium for striping columns of data across logical units of storage with an affinity for rows is provided. When data of a logical slice is requested, a mapping may provide information for determining which logical unit is likely to store the logical slice. In one embodiment, data is retrieved from logical units that are predicted to store the logical slice. In another embodiment, data is retrieved from several logical units, and the data not mapped to the logical unit is removed from the retrieved data.

The patent application was filed on Oct. 1, 2012 (13/633,091).

Standby storage system to detect health of cluster of storage servers
Oracle International, Redwood Shores, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,615,578) developed by three co-inventors for the use of “a standby storage system to detect the health of a cluster of storage servers.”

The co-inventors are Yunrui Li, Fremont, CA, Wei Hu, Palo Alto, CA, and Juan R. Loaiza, Redwood City, CA.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “Detecting an operating condition in a multi-server data storage system. One or more of the data storage servers are designated with a status within the cluster. The designating may be performed by at least one of the data storage servers. The status is encoded into log data having records that report changes to the primary data storage performed by the cluster of data storage servers. The log data is transmitted from the primary data storage to the standby data storage system. The standby data storage system determines an operating condition of the cluster of data storage servers based, at least in part, on the status.”

The patent application was filed on Oct. 7, 2005 (11/245,868).

Processor-bus-connected flash storage paging device
using virtual memory mapping table and page faults

Oracle America, Redwood City, CA, has been assigned a patent (8,627,040) developed by four co-inventors for “processor-bus-connected flash storage paging device using a virtual memory mapping table and page faults.

The co-inventors are Pranay Koka, Michael Oliver McCracken, Herbert Dewitt Schwetman, Jr., Austin, TX, and Jan Lodewijk Bonebakker, Amersfoort, Netherlands.

The abstract of the patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office states: “A method for accessing a virtual memory of a processor using a processor-bus-connected flash storage module (PFSM) as a first paging device and a hard disk drive (HDD) as a second paging device, the method including: allocating a first address partition and a second address partition of a virtual memory for a software application of a processor to the first paging device and the second paging device, respectively, identifying a virtual memory page in the first paging device responsive to a page fault of the virtual memory triggered by the software application, sending a page access request to the PFSM for accessing the virtual memory page responsive to the page fault, and receiving the virtual memory page from the PFSM based on a command of the processor bus issued by the PFSM in conjunction with performing a flash memory access in the flash memory using a flash page address.”

The patent application was filed on Dec. 31, 2012 (13/731,760 ).
