Preliminary CQ2 ’16 Results: HDD Shipments Approach 100 Million+
Exceeding low expectations on improved gaming, PC demand
- 3.5-inch Desktop/CE HDDs: Total desktop/CE HDD shipments (including 3.5-inch external HDDs) declined again to approximately 36 million to 36.5 million in CQ2. Desktop PC sales fell, primarily on a seasonal basis, and other sectors performed about as expected.
- 2.5-inch Mobile/CE HDDs: Gaming demand was up at least 2 million units and notebook PC sales showed a bit more life than expected. After very lean notebook PC builds in CQ1, CQ2 ’16 demand for mobile HDDs stabilized, offsetting the seasonal weakness in branded external HDDs, resulting in total 2.5-inch mobile/CE shipments between 48 million and 50 million HDDs.
- 3.5-inch/2.5-inch Enterprise HDDs: Nearline HDDs were up on continued hyperscale demand, with mix increasing measurably. Traditional enterprise HDDs declined slightly but showed some stability in the sever markets, slowing the dramatic declines seen in prior quarters. The combination of the two categories resulted in roughly flat total enterprise HDD shipments, ranging from 15.5 million to 16 million in CQ2.
