WW Enterprise Storage Systems Up 7% Y/Y in 4Q14 to $10.6 Billion – IDC

But not in favor of storage giants

Total worldwide enterprise storage systems factory revenue grew 7.2% year over year to nearly $10.6 billion during the 4Q14, according to the International Data Corporation‘s Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker.

Total capacity shipments were up 43.7% year over year to 31.8EB during the quarter. Spending for the full year was up 3.6% to $36.2 billion. Full-year capacity consumption was up 43% to 99.2EB.

The storage market had a strong finish to 2014,” said Eric Sheppard, research director, storage. “Fourth quarter spending on enterprise storage systems was up strongly in most major geographic markets, driven by traditional year-end seasonality, demand for midrange systems that incorporate flash capacity, and continued growth of systems designed for hyperscale datacenters.”

4Q14 Total Disk Storage Systems Market Results
EMC finished 4Q14 in the top position within the total worldwide enterprise storage systems market, accounting for 22.2% of all spending. The number 2 position was held by HP, which captured 13.8% of spending during the quarter. Dell and IBM ended the quarter in a statistical tie, with each accounting for 9.0% of global spending. As a single group, storage systems sales by original design manufacturers (ODMs) selling directly to hyperscale datacenter customers accounted for 12.8% of global spending during the quarter.

Note: IBM’s 4Q2014 revenue excludes x86 servers due to the sale of that business to Lenovo.

4Q14 External Disk Storage Systems Results
EMC was the largest external storage systems supplier during the quarter. The company accounted for 32.9% of sales, which was the same share as the previous year. IBM and NetApp generated 11.7% and 10.7% of total sales during the quarter, respectively. HP generated 9.6% of the revenue during the quarter.

Open Networked Disk Storage Systems Highlights
The total open networked disk storage market (NAS combined with non-mainframe SAN) was up 6.1% year over year to $6.3 billion in revenue. EMC maintained its leadership in the total open networked storage market with 35.7% revenue share. NetApp and IBM generated 12.1% and 11.1% of revenue respectively.

Taxonomy Notes:

  • IDC defines a disk storage system as a set of storage elements, including controllers, cables, and (in some instances) host bus adapters, associated with three or more disks. A system may be located outside of or within a server cabinet and the average cost of the disk storage systems does not include infrastructure storage hardware (i.e. switches) and non-bundled storage software.
  • he information in this quantitative study is based on a branded view of the disk storage systems sale. Revenue associated with the products to the end user is attributed to the seller (brand) of the product, not the manufacturer. OEM sales are not included in this study. In this study, HHDS sales do not reflect their OEM sales to Sun and HP.

Comments

Last year WW disk systems revenue decreased 2.7%. In 2014, the industry came back to growth, up 8.6% (see below.). But all the top 5 leaders, EMC, HP, Dell, IBM and NetApp, saw their annual sales going down, the winner being ODM direct and other smaller companies together.
