53% of Networked Ports on External Storage Systems With FC in 4Q15 – Dell’Oro Group

47% for Ethernet

A report from Dell’Oro Group, a source for market information about the telecommunications, networks, and data center IT industries, revealed that the overall storage systems market topped $40 billion in 2015 as EMC, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Dell lead all vendors in sales.

As a percentage of networked ports on external storage systems, FC rose and represented 53% of total, compared to 47% for Ethernet in 4Q15. While Ethernet has been slowly taking share over the last few years, we forecast FC to reverse this trend and take back share of networked ports on external storage systems in 2016,” said Chris DePuy, VP, Dell’Oro.

However, considering networked ports associated with internal storage systems and server ports associated with a subset of external storage systems that are direct attached, Ethernet outnumbered FC by 2.5 to 1.0. In these two categories, we are seeing significant signs of adoption of Software Defined Storage and high speed networked interfaces,” continued DePuy.

During 2015, internal storage systems grew 2% Y/Y while external storage systems were flat as mid-range external storage off-set declines in high-end and now comprises more than half of external storage systems revenue. Rounding out the top five vendors in 2015 were NetApp and IBM.
