HDD Write Recovery Patent From Starvolt for Sale

By ICAP Patent Brokerage

ICAP Patent Brokerage announces for sale patents disclosing a comprehensive data loss prevention solution for all HDDs that have the common unrecovered read error problems, from Starvolt Inc.

Based on recent shipment history, future potential of the addressable market is hundreds of millions of HDD units a year worldwide. This IP package is available via sealed bid, with a bidding deadline of November 20, 2014.

This portfolio should be of interest particularly to HDD drive manufacturers. The cost to implement the technology is minimal, and once implemented, data processing performance and data availability are increased,” says Dean Becker, CEO, ICAP Patent Brokerage.

Key Characteristics and Benefits
Disk drives are subject to ‘grown’ defects during field use, causing data errors to occur in read operations. Spare sectors are provided to accommodate reallocated defective sectors and/or marginally defective sectors.

This portfolio discloses an apparatus for providing a reassignable log for those unrecovered and marginally recovered data blocks that require reallocation to be initiated by the storage controller. When any such data block has a recurrence of error during a next write, the disk drive simply posts an ‘unrecovered write error,’ forcing the storage controller to initiate a write error recovery procedure leading to reallocation of that data block.

Forward citing companies include Seagate, Cirrus Logic, Hitachi, HP, NetApp, and Bank of America.

Technical description of the error detection and write recovery IP sales offering

US Patent 7,490,263: Apparatus, system, and method for a storage device’s enforcing write recovery of erroneous data
Abstract: “An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for a storage device’s enforcing write recovery of erroneous data. The storage device enforces write recovery leading to a reassignment and re-write for the defective data block by the storage controller at a subsequent write opportunity with a usual write without verify command. The invention enables the storage device to identify, and re-discover the defect by automatically verifying the data written, and report an unrecovered write error to the storage controller on said write command, causing said write recovery to occur.”
