University Hospital of Leipzig Deploys PernixData FVP Software

Avoiding storage upgrade while delivering 130x faster reads and 6x faster writes

PernixData, Inc. announced that the University of Leipzig, the second oldest university in Germany, has deployed its FVP software to optimize the performance of essential business and clinical processes.

By putting storage intelligence into high speed server RAM, a concept known as infrastructure level in-memory computing, FVP has accelerated the performance of SAP, SharePoint and other applications at the Hospital, without requiring a storage upgrade or purchase of specialized appliances for application acceleration.

The University Hospital Leipzig, a part of the University of Leipzig, has one of the most advanced structural and technical infrastructures in Europe, with more than 6,000 employees, 3,000 students and approximately 4,000,000 patient procedures a year. As the volume of activity increased within the hospital, it started to experience storage bottlenecks that adversely impacted the performance of several applications. Rather than throw money at a new storage array, Daniel Pfuhl, the hospital’s head of systems management, wanted to find a more strategic solution.

FVP software provided the answer. It virtualizes server-side flash and memory to create a low latency acceleration tier that optimizes the performance of all virtualized applications. No changes are required to existing applications or storage.

With FVP software installed, the university has seen benefits for its Microsoft environment. The login times have never performed better.

After accelerating SharePoint, an external SharePoint consultant said during a recent visit that he’d never seen the SharePoint Central Administration Site load so quickly before,” said Pfuhl.

Additionally, by leveraging FVP software for infrastructure level in-memory computing, the university saw an improvement in SAP performance, including 130x faster reads and 6x faster writes.

Our end users are very happy with the application response time,” said Pfuhl. “The SAP admins have been thoroughly impressed by the storage response times they now see from the SAP transactions.
