Moving Picture Company Equipped With Avere FXT Edge Filers

To speed up motion picture production

Avere Systems, Inc. announced that MPC (Moving Picture company), a visual special effects (VFX) film company, uses Avere FXT Edge filers to turn storyboard concepts into billion dollar box office smashes.

The Avere solution has been deployed in MPC’s studios across the world – in London, Montreal, and Bangalore – to speed up motion picture production by balancing the demands of the storage-hungry rendering of film frames with the needs of other users.

At selected MPC sites, the Avere FXT Edge filers offload EMC Isilon core storage to accelerate the rendering processes while delivering maximum interactivity to the artists’ workstations. Artists need instant access to storage to load and save their creations while the rendering farms are constantly grinding away to produce each frame of the current workload pixel by pixel. The Avere equipment acts as a buffer to prioritize access and this allows the artists to work without time delays and ensures optimum use of storage.

Over the past year, Avere’s solutions have played a major role in MPC’s production of six of the past year’s top 12 global box-office hits. The most striking visuals include a 400-shot aerial battle in Guardians of the Galaxy, the magnificent cliffside castle in Maleficent and the mutant-slaying Sentinels in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Avere really gives us benefits in multiple directions,” said Martin Weaver, head of infrastructure delivery, MPC. “From reducing infrastructure costs to extending the use of our core storage and conserving data center space as the business grows. We continue to find new ways to put these resources and budget savings to work delivering blockbuster results for our clients.
