Karlsruhe City Hospital Opts for HPE Converged Storage and iTernity Compliant Archiving Software

In replacement of EMC Centera

Karlsruhe City Hospital in Germany has migrated from a proprietary appliance system (EMC Centera) to an integrated, flexible and scalable solution based on HPE Converged Storage and iTernity Compliant Archiving Software (iCAS) to cope with explosion of patient data and compliance regulations in archiving.

According to the hospital’s director of the institute for diagnostic and interventional radiology, Prof. Dr. Peter Reimer, high-quality diagnostics using technology have been driving rapid and unpredictable increases in data volumes.

Moreover, certain patient data, such as x-ray and radiation data, require a very long retention period of at least ten years in compliance with the respective data protection regulations. All these have placed high demands on the performance and scalability of the hospital’s storage system, reported the Hospital’s IT department.

As it is very important for the hospital to have the highest degree of operational stability, scalability and cloud capability, the hospital saw a need to deploy a better archiving solution that is flexible, scalable, and can support the virtualization of the hospital’s existing IT infrastructure.

After reviewing a selection of storage systems in the marketplace, the IT department was able to pinpoint that the combination of HPE Converged Storage and iCAS can fulfill all these requirements.

With HPE Converged Storage and iTernity iCAS, we have a cost-effective solution for long-term storage at the hospital. The solution’s virtualization capability and its capacity for easy expansion through non-proprietary storage devices support us in responding quickly and at any time to new requirements coming from the medical field,” argued Holger Hussy, CIO, Karlsruhe City Hospital.

Moreover, the hospital views that iCAS can assure the integrity and security of the hospital’s data at the highest level and can serve as a central archive for all of the hospital’s critical information due to its multiple capabilities. In addition to radiology image data, medical reports, invoices, and other documents from the hospital’s SAP system can archived audit-proof and long-term. The hospital claims that the switch to the new solutions pays off.
