Australian Rising Sun Pictures Turns to Avere

To speed up visual effects

Avere Systems, Inc. announced that Australia-based Rising Sun Pictures (RSP), a visual effects (VFX) specialist with credits including Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows and Gravity, are using its FXT Series Edge filers to deliver higher visual impact in less time and at a lower cost.

RSP turned to Avere to overcome challenges it encountered with its existing NAS infrastructure which was experiencing data sprawl and hotspots.

The more complex the work, the more data we create,” explained Mark Day, director of engineering. “We needed a solution that could accelerate data delivery to rendering nodes while maintaining responsiveness to artist desktops.

RSP has over one hundred projects under its belt providing complex VFX and computer graphics (CG) character work to feature-film and television clients across the globe. In the VFX business, delays and missed deadlines can have a serious financial and reputational impact.

We considered a number of options,” said Day, “The Avere FXT Edge filers proved to be the best solution, giving us cost effective and scalable performance, the ability to easily drop the technology into our existing environment and excellent customer support. With the Avere deployment, we’re experiencing six times faster performance-a render job that previously took six days, for example, now takes just 24 hours. We’re able to keep our artistic and production teams working efficiently.

This is a great example of how Avere was able to make an instant impact without disrupting any workflows and allowing RSP to leverage the investment in its existing storage infrastructure,” said Ron Bianchini, president and CEO, Avere.
