Mellanox Demos Low Latency Long Distance Virtual Reality With 100Gb/s EDR IB

With Scalable Graphics

Mellanox Technologies, Ltd. showcased a Virtual Reality over 100Gb/s EDR IB demonstration at the Supercomputing Conference, Nov. 14-17, Salt Lake City, UT.

Mellanox and Scalable Graphics showcases an ultra-low latency solution that presents the ultimate extended virtual reality experience for rapidly growing industry markets including computer aided engineering, oil and gas, manufacturing, medical, gaming and others.

By leveraging the high throughput and the low latency of Mellanox 100Gb/s ConnectX-4 IB, Scalable Graphics VR-Link Expander provides a near-zero latency streaming solution for bringing an optimal Virtual Reality experience even over long distances.

As opposed to our Ethernet based solution, which requires H.264 encoding of the video stream to cope with Ethernet bandwidth constraints, our IB based VR-Link Expander allows us to send raw image data that eliminates the last milliseconds of overhead,” said Christophe Mion, CTO, Scalable Graphics. “Thanks to Mellanox’s 100Gb/s ConnectX-4 IB it’s impossible to determine if the virtual reality PC is local or remote.”

Expanding industry markets are rapidly adopting virtual reality as a business and training tool in the enterprise, as well as consumer segments,” said Scot Schultz, director HPC/technical computing, Mellanox. “From creating large scale construction of a new campus, to emergency response training and education in health-care and military applications, Mellanox IB has ultra-low latency and the high bandwidth needed to drive real-world VR applications.”
